Homicides across the United States are poised to plummet for the third straight year as 2024 winds down, driving the nation's annual murder toll down to levels not seen since before the pandemic, according to preliminary data from cities both large and small.

Based on available crime statistics from U.S. law enforcement agencies, the year is expected to end with a nearly 16% drop in homicides nationwide and a 3.3% decline in overall violent crime, Jeff Asher, a national crime analyst, told ABC News.

The dramatic drop in homicides surpasses a 13% decline in 2023, then the largest decrease on record until now.

[The pandemic, alas, ushered in a huge rise (though still well below 1980s and 1990s levels.]

Philadelphia -- which recorded an all-time high of 562 homicides in 2021, 516 in 2022 and 410 last year -- has seen a 40% drop in homicides in 2024.

Chicago has recorded a 7% decline in homicides as of Dec. 15, down from 603 murders at this time last year, according to the Chicago Police Department's crime data.

Other major cities seeing precipitous reductions in homicides this year are New Orleans, down 38%; Washington, D.C., down 29%; Memphis, Tennessee, down 23%; Baltimore, down 24%; Kansas City, Missouri, down 20%; and Los Angeles, down 15%.

In addition to violent crime falling, property crime is also poised to finish the year down 8.6% nationwide, mostly due to a 21.4% decrease in motor vehicle theft, Asher said.

where do you get this info.

Every day I wake up I see 2 or three murders in the news. Crime is up by a massive amount where I am.

Crime is up. its not down.. stop listening to the fake news.

Columbus Crime Statistics

2024 remains the lowest [number of murders] of the past 5 years, but November’s 14 homicides was the worst November since at least 2020. Typically, fall into winter is the quietest time, but it doesn’t look like 2024 is going to go out quietly. Still, 2024 is about 22% lower than 2023, and nearly 40% lower than the record year of 2021.

Those who stand to gain from telling people things are bad and only they can fix them.
And slightly less nefariously, ratings. Fear sells. Less people click on articles with good news, so ad revenue goes down.

once again, every day i wake up and the news of the day speaks of one or two murders.

I have been alive for 59 years. i can not remember a time such as this.

I am sorry if I do not trust the news. Anyone can maninulate things to go with the narrative they want it to go.

i can just go off what I see..

or facts over feelings, democrats trying to make it appear as if crime is down in the last three years.

anyone who looks at the fact can see this is not true.. But TDS is a major issue among many people
Facts other than actual data on crime I guess.

You don’t trust the news unless it’s the news of murders?

data can be manipulated. Sadly I learned that awhile ago. I do not trust anything I see. I have been told for the last three years crime is down. But what I see with my eyes does not match what I am being told..

then again, I have been told the economy is doing great. while I see my kids and my own financial power dwindle, and things getting so expensive they are getting out of reach (unless you go in debt for 8 years in loans..

I do not trust the news period. I stopped watching mainstream media a few years go.. All I hear is a bunch of lies and slanted opinions.. and when something bad does happen which would not help them. all you hear is silence..

What facts are you looking at (that you do not seem to have posted to buttress your opinion)?
Again, I shared my experience

lol k. Do you trust the news or don't you? Because it sure seems like you're basing your perception of reality on what you see on the news.

actually in this case. I am seeing a report that says murder is down. which goes against what i see in reality

the report came from the news

Reality came from what I see every morning when I wake up and have al alert on my phone ( I finally shut alerts down)
