Or perhaps this culture has gone to soft and looks for offense when none is intended.

It's grievance politics. Catholic traditionalists want to see themselves as an oppressed minority attacked on all sides, even though they are part of the world's largest and wealthiest religion and enjoy enormous social privileges in many western democracies.

Maybe people in prominent positions like governor should think before they make videos like this

Maybe Christians should stop thinking everything is about them.

Have you watched both clips? Or is this just a feeling.
I watched it... there's a notable difference in the presentation between this iteration and the Colbert did with the actor from the Iron Claw.

It's possible they weren't trying to make it come off that way, but the presentation was close enough that it turned heads.

If someone is looking to make a joke about communion, getting in front of someone with their head right at waist level, after putting on conspicuous headwear, is certainly how I would expect them to do it.

To be fair, the people saying "they wouldn't mock Catholics, not everything is about them"..."Politician XYZ would never support mocking someone's faith" are using a pretty narrow lens of recent history.

If we hit the rewind button, there were politicians (not sure if Whitmer in particular was one of them) voicing support for, and even assisting with fundraisers for, "The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence", a group that does "Drag Nun" performances. (not sure if you remember that whole situations, they're the ones that got invited, then uninvited from an LA dodgers game)

Priests don't typically wear headwear during the liturgy.

If someone is looking to make a joke about communion..
I would expect some sort of religious imagery.. perhaps black/white dress on the part of the one serving. A crucifix or statue, painting/icon on the wall... something of that nature, perhaps a visible cross of some sort on either or both participants.
There was none of that.

Further she's sitting on a couch, not kneeling, but I do understand how that's hard to see.
Given that there are numerous examples in a variety of settings (this is page 1 in the link provided in the OP, no search or account required), including the same brand of chip in one example, most if not all using the same pan techniques and most using that exact music clip...

..I tend to think it's blatently obvious what this is and is not. It's not a mockery of any Catholic ritual.

Gov Witmer is not an "Anti-Christian biggot".

Your words.
These days, any minor or innocuous action can get you labeled as a racist, transphobe, xenophobe etc., etc., etc.
This is where the deck of "offense of the week" cards has brought us. Anyone can be offended about anything and accuse the perp of one phobia or another. So, by the liberal, inclusive fanatic standards... Witmer is a raging anti-catholic bigot.
Vultures are coming home to roost.

A few decades ago, the Democrats would have denounced this governor. We are living in dark times. As a politically moderate Catholic, I am fed up with both parties at the moment, and the Democrats are now showing their true colors: Evil... There is something to be said about the 2020s GOP as well, but it goes to show that neither the Donkey nor the Elephant stand up for us. Only the Lamb does.

In other words, the Donkey and the Elephant have let us down. It is time for us Christians to turn to the Lamb.

True. But we can only elect the Donkey or the Elephant President of the USA. Make the right decision.

Fair enough. I was wrong. It was more of a knee jerk reaction, if anything. I should slow down.

I agree. I'm happy she apologized and made it clear she never meant to mock Holy Communion. It shows she has class.

There is so much of what you post on these forums that I disagree with.

But the occasion where I see you change your mind convinces me I might like to know you IRL.

I've been wrong plenty of times. I'm wiling to admit it.

I just put my foot in my mouth ;)

That is true. Some folks have abstained from voting all together, or went with a 3rd party. Others are voting for the Donkey to have a chance to vote for a more moderate GOP candidate in 2028. My parents are waiting for the GOP to become more moderate again.

Yes, yes. Christians over reacting to slight provocation is the liberals fault.

Yes, but unlike most you are willing to admit it. We will see if others come around. :)
As someone who enjoys religious humor (and an atheist), I can certainly see how Catholics took it the way they did, it looks close enough to a parody of that, that a reasonable person could see it as a possibility.

For instance, if I did something (even if it was a viral tik tok "planking" trend), that involved doing what appeared like putting a carpet down facing east and putting my head down on it, on the show/webcast of a person who hasn't been coy about insulting particular religions in the past, I can see where the Muslims' first impression would be "he's mocking us".

For instance, if I did a "face east planking challenge" on the show "Louder with Crowder", people would understandably try to draw some inferences from that...

The cynic in me wonders if that's particularly why they did it, they wanted to elicit a certain reaction from conservatives that they could then label them as "foolish" for. Sort of like that whole story a few years back about the "clock kid"

One led to the other. They have created an atmosphere of suspicion, doubt, fear, and anger. Everyone wants to be a victim. Nobody trusts anyone. It is the curse of this culture of entitlement. Look for more of this from every sector. I believe it to be a spirit that has invaded the nation—kind of a reaping of what we have sown situation. Only a full-force revival will fix this. We are praying for revival. Otherwise we are going to see fighting in the streets.
