Why is it bad to mention blacks had a higher marriage rate during the Jim Crow era than they do now? It's true. So why is it bad to mention that?
Idk. I think pining for the days of Jim Crow just doesn’t sit right with some people. You can make the argument for stronger marriages and more stable families without invoking that period. It’s also true unemployment for blacks was lowest when they were forced to work the fields but something tells me a politician invoking the antebellum South as an argument for jobs creation wouldn’t be so well received either.

Possibly because it could sound like an argument for legalized racial discrimination as a better way to organize society - unless youre clear its not.

Do you think mentioning historical facts actually means someone is pinning for the days of Jim Crow? Are you say that the better marriage rates were due to Jim Crow laws and blacks not being able to eat in whites only places, the KKK, lynching and so on? Do you actually believe people are wanting that just so black families are stronger?
You can make the argument for stronger marriages and more stable families without invoking that period.
Yes, ir you can mention when the blacks had it real bad they were able to have a stronger marriage and families and so today they most certainly can too. In the days of deep adversity they found a way to keep the families together. Today they face nothing like that, so making marriage and family a priority should be much easier. It has been a proven fact that marriage and family is very good for people and a society. It's easier now than ever. Especially for blacks who don't have to deal with the codified racism of the day.
It’s also true unemployment for blacks was lowest when they were forced to work the fields but something tells me a politician invoking the antebellum South as an argument for jobs creation wouldn’t be so well received either.
Did someone actually say that? We should make blacks go pick cotton? Today there is really no excuse for anyone who is healthy not to have a job. There are businesses everywhere in need of help.

Well I think that is a HORRIBLE assumption to make about someone. Especially when tge person didn't say that. In fact that's believing the worst of someone. I mean jumping to worst possible scenario? We could say that marriage was stronger (about 80%) back in the 1700s as well. Does that mean we think we ought to go back to dirt roads, muskets and no electricity and it was legal to beat your wife? That's jumping to a pretty big conclusion about someone's statement.

I think this is just more evidence how divided we are and the we have a tendency to assume the absolute worst intent about someone who is not politically aligned with us.

It would have been better to point out that the welfare system has been hazardous to marriage and the nuclear family for black people without bringing up Jim Crow

Totally agree. The black family went significantly down hill after that. To claim this man is wishing for Jim Crow days based upon his comment regarding a historical fact, is completely uncalled for. Especially if we haven't seen him exhibit any kind of overtime racist actions or beliefs.

Is that the beat of Graceland?
Not that I can tell.

Graceland is what I casually call a 2-beat. 1 2 1 2 1 2. Kick snare Kick snare..... Very on the pushing edge of the beat as a lot of African music is.

If you dont want people to make a connection to Jim Crow, then dont say "Jim Crow" as the identifier for the era you value. Say "pre welfare" or whatever makes the meaningful connection you intend.

Who are “they”? This was one person.
Yeah the stereotyping in these kinds of discussions is ridiculous. If a democrat does something stupid that somehow implies that all democrats do stupid things and the same with if a republican does something stupid
