• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

For the past year or so, my dad just constantly coughs. The longest I've seen him go without coughing (while he was awake) was maybe 15 minutes, and he has even coughed so hard, that he gave himself a small hernia. He's been to the doctor, and all they gave him was acouple inhalers, but they don't seem to be helping. The doctors diagnosed him with chronic pneumonia I think it was and asthma. He does smoke, but has cut down quite a bit....if it even has anything to do with it. It scares me and tears me up that nothing is helping. I can tell he is annoyed and exhausted from all the coughing. It's even gotten to the point where my mom or I just can't be with him for a while without having to get up and go to the other room just so we don't lose our minds. I love my dad so much, but it hurts seeing him like this.

Is there anyone in the same boat as me? or does anyone know a kind of specialist I can look up for him to get checked out or any other way I can help him? If not anything else, could you please say a prayer for him. Thank you so much.

Hi

I know it's been awhile but...I saw this thread and wanted to respond. Hope you come back to see this...

My grandfather was a smoker (he quit), and I think your father's problems definitely have something to do with that. If he's been smoking for years, it would be a really good idea to take him to a pulmonologist. They can help him in ways that a GP might not be able to, and see things they may not.

Honestly, the best thing he can do for himself is quit smoking all together. My grandfather has emphysema. I don't want your dad to have to suffer through that.

Let me know what happens :)

I too have coughed so hard that I have a hernia from it. I have never been given anything that really helps the coughing. You did not mention what kind of doctor your father was seeing. This is a suggestion, but a pulmonary physician would be an excellent idea if he is not seeing one. Praying for your family. God Bless.
