When Kylo Ren and Han Solo are on that bridge, I thought Kylo did what he did to be diabolical. And it was all set up by him.

However, a friend said Kylo was almost converted to the good side, but then heard the alarms, and turned bad again.

Which is the case?

I'm under the impression that Kylo Ren killed his dad to prove to Snoke that he was truly of the 'dark side.'

After seeing him talking to Darth Vader's mask, I think he was trying to stay on the dark side. His father's presence was tempting him to leave, so he had to decide whether to follow in his grandfather's footsteps and be the villain, or to run home with his loving father and live happily ever after (until a sequel). In the movie, he chose the former.

Just a theory :)
