Russia might be a Christian nation, but whether it's democracy is really is a bit debatable! It is very dependant upon arms sales to other countries. I used to work in the arms industry and it relies very heavily on arms which have been sold to other countries becoming out of date and therefore creating a market for newer replacements.

Coutries who are upgrading sell their older weapons to other countries, often through countries where international arms dealing is a big thing and the whole world is completely saturated with weapons. A lot of the poorest countries in the world are litterally armed to the teeth and their populations are struggling to feed themselves.

We don't need nuclear weapons to wipe out huge parts of the world. We've already got crazy amounts of conventional weapons and soldier just itching to try their skills and their weapons.

Since China is now getting mentioned. China has got it's own problems too. It gets a lot of it water from really huge rivers fed by glaciers in the mountains. Guess what? Global warming has been melting these glaciers. One day, those glaciers will be gone, which means the rivers will be gone as well. I don't think that they will find that very helpful. What are they going to do about that?

In that case, the same thing all ancient civilizations have had to do throughout history when their resources become exhausted.

NATO can not match Russia, or China for man power. NATO's military doctrine would very soon mean using nuclear weapons. I don't think that either side would want to take that risk, but what happens when militant Islamic nations get nuclear weapons? It does not take a lot of know how to make them, once you have obtained the nuclear materials.

NATO can not match Russia, or China for man power.
Russia - 150 million people
USA - 330 million people
EU - 450 million people
NATO - close to a billion people (with Turkey).

In fact, Russia cannot match NATO for man power. And China is even.

Modern wars don't always have enough time for troops to be trained and mobilised.
Indeed it could be possible for a war to be done in days or hours. Push button, duck and cover, die knowing you killed your enemy too. Thirty minutes even.

During the 1970's the UK had about 70 to 80 ships in the Royal Navy, it's a lot less that that by now. There won't be time to build more ships if a war starts and building more aircraft is not going to be possible in an appropiate timescale either. We will have to fight with what we've already got. A really serious all out war between Nato and Russia, might all be over in a few days, or even less.
