Trump loses bid to halt Jan. 6 civil lawsuits while he fights criminal charges in the 2020 election case

The lawsuits brought by Democratic lawmakers and police officers who defended the Capitol on Jan. 6 seek civil damages for harm they say they suffered during the attack, which aimed to stop Congress’ certification of Biden’s victory.

Judge’s protective order in Trump Jan. 6 civil case leaves little room for former president to sidestep police, lawmakers during discovery

The 21-page order signed by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta are terms parties have mutually agreed to as the years-old cases plod ahead. Late last month, as Law&Crime previously reported, Mehta issued a September deadline for all to complete discovery and get the civil proceedings underway after the former president had staved it off for more than a year.

Trump Rally Organizer Claims Trump’s Chief of Staff Was on Phone Call Planning Jan. 6 March on Capitol
Trump’s team agreed it would encourage supporters to march, but try to “make it look like they went down there on their own,” Scott Johnston tells Rolling Stone
Asked about Johns[t]on’s allegations, Kylie and Amy Kremer responded through their spokesman, Chris Barron. “The claim regarding the substance of any phone call between Katrina Pierson, Kylie Kremer, and Mark Meadows is absolutely false,” Barron wrote. “If anyone gave testimony to the J6 committee claiming that such a call took place and that was the substance of the call should be incredibly concerned — the last I looked lying to Congress was a crime.”

Amy Kremer helped organize the pro-Trump Jan. 6 rally. Now she is seeking a Georgia seat on the RNC

As Trump seeks a return to the White House, Kremer is trying to win one of two Georgia seats on the Republican National Committee. The votes at a state party convention Saturday are expected to show how consumed by the 2020 election the GOP remains in Georgia and everywhere else.

State convention delegates will choose one man and one woman to the national party’s governing body on Saturday in Columbus.

Kremer argues the RNC hasn't done enough to fight for Trump or protect others who fought for him, like the 16 Georgia Republicans who falsely claimed to be valid Trump electors in a state Joe Biden won.

Georgia's GOP has splintered. Gov. Brian Kemp created a rival fundraising and political operation after Trump attacked him for backing the 2020 election results. The fracture deepened when some party leaders supported former U.S. Sen. David Perdue's unsuccessful, Trump-backed challenge to Kemp in 2022. Neither Kemp nor his allies will attend the convention.

DOJ seeks 11 years for conservative scion Brent Bozell IV, saying he 'led the charge' on Jan. 6

Bozell, also known as "Zeeker," smashed windows at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and was convicted of a host of charges in September, including five felonies. He is scheduled to be sentenced May 17. Federal prosecutors, in a sentencing memo filed late Friday, sought a terrorism sentencing enhancement for Bozell, saying that his actions were intended to affect the conduct of the government and that he made preparations for Jan. 6 because he "believed that the presidential election had been 'stolen' and thus planned to respond through violence."

Son of prominent conservative family sentenced to nearly 4 years for Jan. 6

A judge rejected the government request for terrorism enhancement but likened the actions of Leo Brent Bozell IV to those who spearheaded the riot.

While the judge likened Bozell’s conduct to that of Proud Boys’ member Dominic Pezzola and Texas Three Percenters recruiter Guy Reffitt — who similarly spearheaded rioters behind them to break into the building and overwhelm police — the 45-month sentence he handed Bozell was only a third of the nearly 12 years sought by prosecutors and years less than what Pezzola and Reffitt received.

Bozell, 44, of Palmyra, Pa., was convicted after a bench trial in September of 10 counts, including felony charges of assaulting police, rioting, destroying government property and obstructing Congress’s confirmation of the election.

FBI searches for growing [but single-digit] number of Jan. 6 fugitives

Eric Bochene ... was defiant during some hearings, invoking language consistent with the sovereign citizen movement. In one set of court filings, Bochene unsuccessfully asked the court to pay him $75,000 an hour in fees for his legal services in his own case. Bochene signed one court filing with a red fingerprint.

Bochene failed to appear for a mandatory pretrial status conference in Washington, D.C. on July 18. A judge issued a warrant for Bochene's arrest, which led to Bochene's capture by U.S. Marshals in the southern tier of New York and a court appearance in Binghamton on Aug. 2.

Bochene, who pleaded guilty to the charge of entering a restricted building, faces up to one year in prison at sentencing in November. [But he has to stay in jail until sentencing, due to his vanishing act.]

Central NY man who attacked Capitol Jan. 6 gets more jail time after arrest for hitting his minor daughter in the face

Eric Bochene was arrested in February in his hometown of New Hartford on charges that he hit his minor daughter in the face. The injuries required stitches, police said in court documents.

New Jan. 6 footage appears to show rioter firing a gun in the air during Capitol attack [From February this year]

WASHINGTON — Newly unearthed footage from Jan. 6, 2021, appears to show a rioter — a man identified in an NBC News story nearly two years ago — firing a gun into the air outside the Capitol during the attack.
Banuelos has not been arrested or charged in connection with Jan. 6; the Salt Lake City police had arrested him in connection with the fatal stabbing of 19-year-old Christopher Thomas Senn in a park on July 4, 2021.

During arraignment, Capitol riot defendant defiantly predicts Trump will win election and shutter Jan. 6 criminal cases

John Banuelos of Illinois, accused of firing a loaded gun in a mob while outside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, interrupted his arraignment proceedings Monday with blistering criticism for his court-appointed defense lawyer, denunciations of the District of Columbia and vulgarity in his verbal exchanges with the judge.

When urged by Washington, D.C. federal judge Tanya Chutkan to be careful about what he said open court, Banuelos told the judge, "Trump is going to be in office in six months, so I have nothing to worry about."

Trump posted on social media earlier this year that among his first acts if returned to the White House would be to "[f]ree the January 6 Hostages being wrongfully imprisoned!"

According to the Justice Department, on Jan. 6, Banuelos was captured on video as he climbed a scaffolding being used to prepare the Capitol for Joe Biden's inauguration. Prosecutors allege he waved to the crowd, pulled out his gun and fired two shots in the air.

The Justice Department filed charges against Banuelos in March

I'm sure that will age well.

Man Nicknamed ‘Live Wire’ Pleads Guilty, Faces 6-Year Prison Stretch For Capitol Police Assault Plot On Jan 6

Confronted with an overwhelming abundance of evidence, Dan Edwin Wilson, 48, of Louisville, pleaded guilty to conspiring to obstruct or injure a federal officer, as well as federal firearms offenses for possessing an unregistered firearm, the Justice Department announced Monday.

Prosecutors revealed Wilson’s premeditated plans dating back to winter 2020, using encrypted apps to organize violence. Referring to himself as a “gray ghost ranger” and hinting at militia ties, he discussed bringing firearms to D.C. for potential government takeovers.

Days before the attack, Wilson pledged allegiance to the cause: “I am ready to lay my life on the line. It is time for good men to do bad things.”

Banuelos with his distinctive cowboy hat, stuck out in the footage from the night before. He seemed a bit of hot head. I'm frankly not surprised.
