Using a tablet as a Bible in Church

I belong to a very large church. So far I have not witnessed anyone using a tablet (computer) as a Bible. Is the Bible to sacred to be substituted by a tablet? In my opinion, there are a lot of advantages. Several translations can be selected; I can make notes and store them; I can change the font size; I can stop carrying my 6 pound Bible around and replace it with a 2 pound tablet.

Another factor that plays into this decision is my age. I am considered a senior citizen and many may look down on someone of my age being more technologically advanced than our teen-agers (at least in area of electronic Bibles).

I believe that tablets are the wave of the future. Before long even school text books will be available on tablets. Why not tablets in church?

My wife has a bible on her smartphone. It is easy to carry and lightweight. Technology need not mean forbidden.

I saw a visitor in church yesterday using her smartphone too.

I've seen an iPad and kindle brought in but those guys went back to their bibles in short order, never asked them why they didn't keep using them.

I use my phone all the time at church it is much less to carry around. But when I am home doing devotionals or study I use the real thing. =]

When I go to church, my iPod has a notes section and a Bible as well. I use my iPod Touch to take notes, but I use my ACTUAL Bible so I can bookmark, underline, circle, write in margins, etc. Nothing wrong with using a Bible on an iPod to take notes in Church, BUT in personal study, devotional time, and even at church, people still need to bring their Bibles. It's just easier to hide the word in our hearts if we can hold the pages and do what we want as far as underlining, bookmarking, circling, whatever.... iPod is more restricted.

But I see nothing wrong with the format of the Scriptures, the only reservation I *might* have with technology is that people will get distracted with other things as I see so often (texting, checking apps, searching something else, etc).

I am very traditional when it comes to bibles. I wont condemn anyone for using their electronics but I myself will stick to the actual book.

Believers simply adapt with the technology of the time.
Back in the caveman days the bibles were made of big, huge rocks with the words carved in them. The preacher saying "Turn in your Bibles to...." often caused several injuries. They took up so much room there was hardly any room for anyone to sit in the pews....which were made of rock, too.
Then there were the hymnals......

Technology changes and I don't see why we Christians shouldn't use what God has given us. If an electronic device allows you to worship and learn more about God, by all means, go for it.

What will pastors do if tablets become a trend? Will they preach against these "devilish devices" and tell their congregation to stick with the tried and true paper KJV?

Personally, I like having all my Bible resources in one place whether it be a home or church. I'm thinking about putting my tablet in a case, then It will look more like a Bible.

Nothing about what the Bible is printed on is sacred, only the truth of the words within.

It doesn't' matter whatsoever in what form the Bible is presented, as long as it IS the full Bible and it hasn't been changed.

I have tried using my smartphone as a Bible in church, but it hasn't worked all that well for me. There is just something that is more satisfying about turning to the page in an actual book. I have no problem with anyone else using an electronic Bible. It just doesn't feel right for me.

I personally don't have a smartphone or tablet, but sort of admire those that have them. Like someone else mentioned before, I would be more inclined to use my hard-copy at home for study so i can make notes in the margin etc., but there are times during church when I wish I could look up a verse that I couldn't recall the location off-hand, but knew enough of the keywords so that if I could type them in and get the verse almost immediately. Those are the times I wish I had a tablet in church.

I have not carried a paper bible in about a year now. I find great advantages in having an Ipad with an assortment of translations with search capabilities, an area where I can make notes from the sermon that I can save electronically, carry my bible study materials to teach my Sunday school class, and full access to my Logos Bible software. New technology is cool.
