why dont u want one?
I am not really sure how to answer this question, corvet. Mainly because I tend to ask myself "why?" if I want something, and not if I don´t want something.
So the simple answer would be: Because I wouldn´t know why to want one.
I imagine it to be inconvenient, I imagine the procedure of implanting it painfully and coming with risks of infection.
Whilst I certainly have auto-destructive tendencies (I am a smoker, for example), I can´t seem to relate to auto-aggression. Yes, I will take some pain if the goal seems worth it (like when I make a bicycle tour through the Alps which comes with quite some suffering and pain), but in regards to piercings, tattoos and such I don´t find the goal attractive.
To put it quite straightforward: Cramming things through my skin does not really make sense to me. To me it has a certain absurdity about it. Why don´t you want to drill a hole through your leg, or why don´t you want to take a chainsaw and cut off one of your toes (just assuming here you don´t)? ;)
That said, in my teen days I had myself pierced an ear hole and wore an ear-ring, still do it today occasionally. Which is essentially not any different from a tongue piercing.
So I guess I the social conventions and fashions of my generation play a part in my preferences, too.
Another thing: With growing age I find myself less and less concerned with fashionable accessoires and appearance.

On a somewhat related note, and while we are at it:
I am very skeptical towards the tendency of older generations to imitate those fashions with which the young generation tries to find an identity in appearance - the purpose of which actually is to look different from what their parents. Why undermine their efforts?

:)

sounds good to me, also off subject do you believe in God. I cannot tell if it is clear on your beliefs cause I love Jesus Christ.
No, I don´t believe in any god concepts.
Although you said it was off subject, you did mention your belief. Just for clarification and out of curiosity: Do you feel that there is (or might be) any relevance of god belief for issues like body art?

Quatona's answer reflects most of my thoughts on the subject. If I did want one, I'd be fearful of infection and accidental tearing. Piercings, while sometimes interestingly decorative, can be hazardous. I had an earring ripped through my lobe years ago (an accident), and it would require some minor surgery to fix the split. My skin is thin and the surgery might make just as much of a mess.

A coworker had his tongue pierced. He said it cured his stuttering by forcing him to concentrate on enunciation. I could see why it worked considering the size of the dumbell in his mouth, but judging from the prolific tattoos he had, I don't think that's why he did it.

It's probably fine for for medical purposes, but I wouldn't recommend it for recreational use even if everybody in Amsterdam does it. :p

Just wondering who has a tongue piercing, how do you feel about it?
I did want my tongue pierced years ago, but I was in the military and that was against the rules. Now I could, but I really don't want to anymore.

I got mine done a few years ago and it didnt hurt at all.
I can see why people dont know why people get it done but it does have its benefits. ;)

The main reason I got mine done was I wanted a piercing and didnt want to follow everybody else by getting my ear, lip, labret etc done.

Now loads of people I know has it done.
Funny how things work out huh?

I had my tongue pierced several years ago and still have a ring in. (though I do take it out on occasion for a couple of days) Now I see 16 year olds getting their mom to sign for them to get it done. Which for some reason just seems weird. But I'm a person who really likes piercings (for example I love the back piercings where if you take ribbon you can lace it down your back like a corset). Not everyone has taste for piercings and thinks they are gross or dirty. That I do think is silly, because every person I knew who had lots of piercings was extremely clean (some almost to a point of being OCD).

My dentist told me a couple of horror stories about patients with tongue piercings. And apparently it can damage your teeth as well. My daughter had her eyebrow pierced and it ripped out quite dramatically. She has a scar now running through her eyebrow and the hair won't grow there. It's a shame because she is a pretty girl and, as her mom, I hate seeing it there knowing it for nothing. I have no problem with anyone piercing anything but I will quietly think they are not that bright. Fortunately, people who pierce don't care what I think.

rainygirl,
Its called gauging up. Different cultures do it a fair bit (I guess you could call them more "tribal") and it does have roots in history. Why do you think it looks awful. Most people(most I know at least) who gauge their ears out very far put decorative plugs in so its not like you see their holes?

Even if most people who do that wouldn't care what you think don't you think that's a little wrong of you to think that about people you don't even know? :sigh:

I think people need to stop putting a stigma on things they don't even try to understand.
