Trump is slapping Tariffs and saying (consistently) "become the 51st State if you don't like it"

This is called bullying.
Tariffs have been used by both admins. I don't like his language either but it seems to be working there is some kow towing going on. I also don't like his tariffs because the mainstream disagrees but I'll hide and watch to see if the MS and I are wrong.

In all honesty, I didn't vote for a personality contestant I voted for a President by the choices offered.

Economies were already in decline prior to Covid.

Covid was just a convenient excuse to accelerate inflation.
Yes, our economy was in decline, I think since 2018. I don't think Biden wanted to accelerate inflation also it's political suicide, I think it was the ignorance of our politicians on fiscal policy that injected money into the system and created a whiplash effect. I still think our economy is headed to a recession and like you said it's been happening prior if the beast wants to reset it's going to no matter how much we spend trying to keep it afloat.

Yes, tariffs have been used by ALL president admins. What at issue here is seeing every problem as a nail, and the only hammer in one's tool box is tariffs. Doesn't work that way. They shouldn't be used recklessly. It's just simpleminded. We seen what Trump's tariffs did last time, and to now double down on that means the ramifications suffered will also be double downed. Last go round we, the tax paying consumers, had to bail out the farmers who were losing their farms as their soybeans rotted in their silos. Last time it literally cost American jobs.

Agreed but no sign of that so far. Sanctions shouldn't be used recklessly either.

Agreed a trade war is not good for us. I also fault the farmers for solely relying on China. There are tariffs on Chinese EVs but China is diversifying its market.

Farmers do not sale directly to countries like China. They sale to importer/exporters.

We're a little more than a week into Trump's administration, and he's already threatened Mexico, Canada, Denmark, Taiwan, and Colombia with tariffs. Possibly more - those are just the ones I could think of off the top of my head. Reasons for this have included "We have a trade deficit," "They won't sell me Greenland," and "They won't accept migrants on military planes." I would consider that "reckless use of tariffs".

If I'm a farmer and know that there is a gigantic market for soy beans, I'm not thinking of growing okra because of some future trade war.
There is only one large market for soybeans

The trade war caused exporters to diversify markets. Farmers can sell to foreign countries directly and I'd imagine these might be large farms selling to Mexico.

Trump literally thinks all trade should be even steven.
To him if trade is not even, and there is a deficit, and if there is a deficit then the US is getting hosed. Never mind the US is the largest consumer, more than all of Europe, China, Japan, and Germany combined. Never mind companies, like some Trump owns himself, run to have their products made there because it's cheaper. This is what alarms me about Trump. The man is too dumb to know he's dumb and it's steeped in narcissism. For example. He knows after being corrected multiple times foreign countries do not pay the tariffs, the importing country does. But his narcissism won't allow him to admit he is wrong, so he double downs on a claim everyone knows by now that just isn't true.

It caused importers to diversify their markets. The Chinese importers left the US and bee-lined down to Brazil in trade war retribution. Back home, this: "Amid Trump Tariffs, Farm Bankruptcies And Suicides Rise." Hearken back to that chart I provided of who imports the most soy beans. Of that metric ton figure in China, we supplied half. Which is about the same as the other 6 behind China combined. Also keep in mind other countries have trade agreements where they just aren't interested in breaking those agreements to buy from the US. Hence, soybeans rotted in their silos.

What are they doing with all those soybeans?

They were selling them on the world market, now the fields are planted with corn. Well, not now, now the fields are under snow.

We have differing views on reckless tariffs because I believe that a tariff isn't a threat to an economy till it's implemented, we'll have to see how reckless they are in February. Trump's verbal threat has got many countries negotiating on various trade issues and I think this is a good thing.

Generally speaking, negotiation by threat isn't good policy. It burns goodwill and damages our international relationships. Sure, it's mostly worked out so far, but again, it's only been a week. Long-term effects of Trump's bullying may take years to manifest. Considering only the direct effects is very short-sighted.

I agree but it's working. The long-term effect of the Trump threat is unknown but the effects of de globalized economies might be a bigger threat. Everything the government does is short-sided.
