Memory verse games

If you can be loud, you can play "hot and cold" with a Bible verse. I saw this used in a backyard club. One person was chosen to find an object and turned away while the children watched another person hide it. When the child chosen to find the object began searching the area for the object, the others would say the verse over and over, softer if going farther away or louder if getting closer until the object was found.

I've hidden the words around the room, had the children find them, and put them together.

I also like to make sure they know what the verse means, which makes it easier to remember.

I've just recently started teaching the 4 & 5 year olds again. I'm not sure that the previous teacher placed a lot of emphasis on the memory verse. Most of my kids are girls. There is one boy within the group. Plus, I have a 2-year old. Pretty much I'm babysitting her and trying to teach the other kids. I see a few games that would help me in getting the children to learn their memory verse. My question is, does anyone have ideas for the younger crew?

One time-honored practice is to make it a song you teach them. Almost all the verses I remember from childhood were put to music.

My kids really like to learn the memory verse in song. I've used CDs like Scripture Rock by Troy and Genie Nilsson and the "seeds" series, like Seeds of Faith and Seeds of Courage. We usually do one or two of the songs at the beginning of class. We play the songs with musical chairs or just in the background during games. After the kids are famliiar with the songs, we instroduce the corresponding memory verses and they are usually thrilled to see that they already knowthem. The CDs I mentioned are a hit with my 5 to 10 year-olds, but I know there are other CDs out there that would also be suited for smaller children.

Tonight I put the words inside balloons. Then I had the class divided up into groups and they had to one at a time run down to the other end of the room, sit on the balloon bad then bring the paper with the word on it back so the next one could go. Then the team had to work together to put all the words together in order. First team finished won. It was really noisy but out classroom is in a separate building from the church.

we also do the rhythm game... slap legs, slap legs, clap , clap, snap snap. on the snaps each person says two of the words of the verse they take turns going around the circle. if they don't say them on the snaps or say the wrong words they are out and everyone starts over.

For the really little ones we'd teach a song for each verse. I'd often hear the 1.5 to two year olds singing the songs weeks later. If we didn't know a song for the verse already we'd sing it to the tune of another song, like row row your boat or something like that.

I have to say, these are really great ideas. I am also a Sunday School teacher and I teach 2-7 year olds. One thing that's difficult is that I attend a small church and we only have 2 two year olds, so naturally, since I teach the younger kids, they're in my class. But its hard to keep them concentrated, especially since they dont quite yet understand what I'm saying, nor can they communicate as yet. Any ideas as to how I could implement a lesson that will both edify the two and seven year olds simultaneously?

That's a tough one!
I'd say to try something a bit more creative . . .
Have them march around the "walls of Jericho"
Have them act out different stories
Have the older ones help the younger with simple crafts about the story.
