The point I was trying to make is that it is kosher or unkosher depending on your faith.
That's utterly ridiculous. You can't change Kosher.

Maybe you don't AGREE with keeping kosher, but Kosher has a specific definition and you can't make it mean whatever you want.

Morever, its not even something the dictionary defined, G-d defined "Kashrut". Agree with keeping it or not, but you can't make up whatever definition you want.

Agreed. What he said would be like telling a vegetarian that you can't define what's meat and what's not because it depends on your values. *rolls eyes*

So tuna is....kosher but questionable?

Hey Zhilan, are you in China?
Not anymore. I lived there when I joined CF so I've just kept the flag.

You want to talk about a place with un-Kosher galore....aiyo. I had a friend there who is allergic to shellfish and she had such a hard time becuase first they put shrimp in everything, and then even when it's not a shrimp dish, like maybe it's a veggie dumpling, well they will grind up shrimp and mix it in! She had to carry her eppi pin with her everywhere. Oh and then another delight, one time my teacher gave us these crackers and so I was eating them and they tasted kind of strange and we asked about them and he explains they are "meat floss" crackers which means they put pig hair in them!!:sick::sick:

Although, there is a surprisingly large Orthodox Jewish population there. Go figure.

Recent independent sampling of canned tuna taken from supermarket shelves in the U.S., and commissioned by the Mercury Policy Project for mercury testing, found that over six-percent of white albacore tuna samples contain mercury at or above the FDA’s Action Level of 1 part-permillion (ppm). Tests results also found that amounts of mercury in “white” lbacore canned tuna had average levels over four-times higher than “light” Tuna. http://www.mercurypolicy.org/new/documents/CanTheTuna061903.pdf

Looking over the link (which was very interesting and informative, btw - thanks), did anyone else giggle at this entry:

Pigfish (Orthopristis chrysoptera).

:D
Science Name: Thunnus alalunga
Other Names: longfin, albie, pigfish, Pacific albacore, German

 ^_^

Albacore, like other species of tuna, have unique biological characteristics that enable them to swim at speeds over 50 miles per hour and cover vast areas during annual migrations. They have torpedo-shaped bodies, smooth skin, and streamlined fins. http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/fishwatch/species/pac_albacore.htm

Hah, yeah... I've heard that before and makes me wonder how they do it! They must make EVERYTHING on their own.

Check out this video. It's a series video-reporting thing that this girl who lives in China does. She's Jewish and she has a whole series detailing her quest to find a husband. In this episode she checks out the Beijing Chabad community. It's pretty interesting and the series is really cute (and she speaks Chinese really well!)

Yeah, that cracked me up too.

Bah, you should pm me the answer, I don't want to watch a whole series just for that one answer!!!! :p
haha, unfortunately I don't know the answer either. I'll ask my boyfriend, he's watched the series because he keeps up on all the China things and he showed me this episode because he knows I'm interested in Judaism. I'll ask him if he knows and then tell you!

Oh, another thing that's cool was the "mei" (beautiful in Chinese) also meaning water in Hebrew. That worked out nice!
