How Do You Know if You Have the Gift of Tongues?

I know a lot of people who have the gift of tongues, but none have been able to explain to me how I would know when I get the gift.

When you got the gift of tongues:

  1. Did you hear a voice in your head and repeat what it said?
  2. Was it involuntary - did your tongue just move by itself?
  3. You intended to pray in English (or whatever your mother tongue is) and as you were praying you suddenly realized that you were actually praying in tongues.
  4. Something different (specify).

Some people told me that it just started with a syllable/word, and then, over time as they prayed daily it developed. But I'm sure that someone who does not have the gift of tongues could do the same.... start with any syllable and after practicing, it would naturally develop. So how is a person supposed to know when you receive the gift of tongues? Perhaps I already have it and don't know? Or maybe some people who think they have it don't really have it?

My experience: I went to a revival with a few others from my church; I had heard that the pastor was very anointed and many souls were being saved thru his anointed messages. As praise went up to the Lord, I heard this soft, quite, yet beautiful worship; I looked around to see where it was coming from; a lady was sitting two seats down from me; I thought oh Lord, I would love to worship you in that manner. I had heard of speaking in tongues before; but the person's that I had heard appeared to be flamborant and loud. I never desired to speak in tongues until I heard the lady. Anyway, I finally stopped watching the lady and began to earnestly for the person's who had gone up front for the minister to pray for them. After service, I told the Lord that I love to worship Him; and that I would love to worship Him in tongues. Before I could get out of the door; I was speaking in tongues; as a matter of fact, I could not stop; all of the way home, in my bed the tongues flowed. I was in awe that the Lord had answered my prayer so quickly. My gift is for worship not for instruction or interpretation. I only asked...and received.

At the time, I was so wrapped up in worship, that I honestly couldn't give you an answer. Did I initiate it? No. But I allowed it.

There have been times that it was totally involuntary, and again, those are times I am so caught up in God that I'm not paying much attention to what's coming out of my mouth. BUt there are also times that I initiate it, and speak of my own choice. But I don't hear words and repeat them. I just open my mouth, and they come out with no thought behind them, other than praising God or interceding for someone.

#3 has happened to me a couple of times. I was praying one time for a lady - there were three of us praying for her, me in English, and the others in tongues. I heard another voice come in, and wondered who it was that had joined us with such a beautiful prayer language. I actually opened my eyes to see who it was, only to realize it was me.

I was sending English to my mouth, but That's not what was coming out. It was really cool.

I wish I had the gift. I had gone to a Reformed church in years past and was taught that it was not of God and that the gifts of the Spirit has ceased with the apostles. Well, about 4 years ago I started going to a Non-dom church and through growing there, hearing it done by brothers and sisters in Christ who I knew loved the Lord and listening to teachers like Damon Thompson, Perry Stone, and Ron Phillips I repented of my unbelief in the gift and the baptism in the Holy Ghost. I've sought forgiveness for my past beliefs, I've read Luke 11:13 and have asked the Lord for the baptism and the gift of tongues for a prayer language, and have not received either after a couple years.

How do you get this gift and this baptism in the Holy Ghost? I really want the gift badly, and I just don't know why my prayers to have it are not being answered. Am I missing something??

This is a great question and something I wondered myself. I was praying to God and asked for the baptism of the Holy Spirit when all of a sudden my tongue came "loose". This is hard to explain, but it's as if God started moving my tongue, but no sounds came out. It was a very bizarre feeling...nothing I'd ever felt before. I remember reading that God does not force people to speak in tongues so we must use our voice to speak. I started saying something like ahh and immediately I started speaking in tongues. It was absolutely amazing. This didn't take days; it all happened within a few minutes. I had complete control over my voice and I could stop and then start again...God didn't force me to speak in tongues.

I never heard a voice in my head and I didn't speak English. It was involuntary when my tongue came loose, but it was voluntary to use my voice to speak. I spoke a sound and it just started.

I also asked the Lord for a few years before He allowed me to speak in tongues. I had unconfessed sin and I believe for me, this is why He didn't answer my prayer.

I don't know of any unconfessed sins, I try to repent of all my sins daily or every two days at least. And I always ask for God to reveal to me through the Holy Spirit any sins I need to confess specifically by name, and I do when He brings them to my mind.

"When you got the gift of tongues:
Did you hear a voice in your head and repeat what it said?"

Nope - It was during musical worship at the Sidney chapter of the FGBMFI in the spring of '73. I'd been prayed for to receive the "Baptism in the Holy Spirit" some weeks before and nothing OVERT happened at the time.

BUt this evening, while we were in worship, a "strange word" just appeared in my mind, and when I spoke it, more words came, and I spoke them.

I speak English, and a bit of German - and you could say that my "German is "just there" - and I can speak it whenever I feel like it. "Tongues are the same - they're "just there", and you can speak 'em anytime you wish for as LONG as you wish, and they'll just "Flow through".

"Was it involuntary - did your tongue just move by itself?"

DEFINITELY NOT - Involuntary tongues tend to be of demonic origin, and are sometimes observed to occur WITHOUT the person's mouth even moving!!

"You intended to pray in English (or whatever your mother tongue is) and as you were praying you suddenly realized that you were actually praying in tongues."

Not to me personally, although I've heard "variations of that theme" occasionally over the decades where one started just praying, and then simply switched over into a Holy Spirit-given language instead." One of the gals in my old Bible study was plowing on a tractor in her dad's field, and just started speaking in tongues, and felt a "Peace" to it. She wasn't even Pentecostal - U.C.C. in fact.

"Some people told me that it just started with a syllable/word, and then, over time as they prayed daily it developed."

And some churches/ministers actually TEACH you to "start it out that way" - Priming the pump, as it were. "Baby talk" or just speaking "gibberish" to get it started. I'm PERSONALLY TOTALLY OPPOSED to any such foolishness.

My "Tongue" was just THERE suddenly, and required NO "Development" or "practice".

"But I'm sure that someone who does not have the gift of tongues could do the same.... start with any syllable and after practicing, it would naturally develop."

As a matter of fact Marjoe Gortner, who was a TOTALLY PHONY "Pentecostal evangelist" until his conscience got the better of him, used to teach folks to speak in tongues exactly that way - start simple, and build on it.

Bottom line - if there's NOTHING THERE TO SPEAK - then DON'T DO ANYTHING to try to Get it started.

And When it's there - just speak it. Some folks have "explosive" experiences when they're "filled with the Spirit". Others - like me - have no significant experience at all - it's "Just there".

"Perhaps I already have it and don't know?"

I rather doubt that - a language that flows effortlessly into your mind that you speak is rather "distinctive".

"Or maybe some people who think they have it don't really have it?"

I would just about GUARANTEE that with some of the "Peer pressure", and BAD instruction folks get in some Pentecostal churches - particularly from the "Pump Primers" - there are plenty of folks that THINK they're speaking in tongues, when all they're doing is speaking fleshly driven gibberish.

The ONENESS Pentecostal groups PARTICULARLY don't believe that you're even SAVED unless you choke out an acceptable "tongue" - talk about PRESSURE!!!!

I know people who believe that way. But I see no scriptural evidence or reasoning for it.

i had an argument with a friend about this. I actually recorded our little debate and uploaded it, i thought i'd share it below. I didn;t believe in tongues and she's a strong believer in it, but after re-hearing our convo, it really made me think and her arguments were quite challenging in my opinion, so maybe this might help. Not sure, but i wanna share just incase her arguments might be worth getting heard by others. Also, something went wrong with my recorder in my laptop so after you reach more than halfway the voice will sound really weird because of the recording reception, but i hope it still gets understandable. It will be a little distorted and unclear, but it reverts to being intelligible again

no ... it is in HIS time ... not ours ... if you don't have it, then He didn't give it to you ... gifts are for receiving ... not taking ... especially in light of the fact that all things come from Him ... have you looked at what other gifts He may have given you ... when we put to use that whcih He gives us, He often gives us more ...

For me it was involuntary. I was riding in the car on the way back from church and had been seeking the gift for weeks. All of a sudden I started speaking in tongues under my breath. I was so excited and quickly told my wife who was driving. I have learned to not force the gift but also not to cease prayer for it. People get the gifts of the spirit at different times in different ways. My wife has never received it yet and has tried so hard in the past. Its hard to understand why God makes some people wait but its our faith in Him that makes us understand that we should not question His ways.

I read all these posts with great interest. It just shows how diverse God is when He brings experiences to people. It shows that God does not have just one method of filling a person with the Holy Spirit and giving them the gift of tongues. I loved the one about a person thinking he is praying in English and tongues is coming out of his mouth! And then the other one who just started praying in tongues because it started to flow out of him.

From my observations these are the different ways I have seen people receive the gift of tongues:

They have burst forth in tongues as they rose out of the water of baptism.
They started to speak in tongues when hands were laid on them.
Another guy started thinking these strange words in his mind and when he started speaking them out came a fluent language.
Another person I know had a dream of a ticker tape machine and there were words on the tape, so he started speaking them and found he was speaking in tongues.
Another person got so filled with joy that his heart was about to burst and he couldn't find the words to praise God so he just started speaking anything and found he was speaking a fluent language he couldn't understand.
Someone else started trying to put syllables and words together and before long was speaking a fluent language.
Another person copied someone else's tongue, got all tied up trying to speak it and then started speaking a totally different language.

So, although the pathway to tongues was so diverse, the end result is that all these people ended up speaking in tongues.

Here is my experience:

I had been seeking the gift of tongues for three weeks, and I was getting frustrated because nothing was happening. I just didn't whether some type of force was going to take over my voice or what.

Anyhow, I was sitting on my bed reading a book about the baptism in the Spirit when a paragraph of the book suddenly jumped out at me. It said, "Why are you begging and pleading for something I gave you 2000 years ago. Forget about your pride and just accept Him into your life!"
This gave me a shock, but I said, "Lord, I accept the Holy Spirit into my life."

I didn't feel any different, but I started thinking that if I am now filled with the Spirit, I can speak in tongues. I thought, how am I going to do that? All I thought I could do was try and speak, so I started speaking, "Aba, caba, daba, rabu, slavu." It sounded very stilted to me and I felt a bit silly, but I was determined. I read someone in the Scripture that the Spirit would flow out of me as rivers of living water. So I worked on getting that flow going. I kept at it for about half an hour I suppose, and then it got fluent. I started speaking something like:
"kasabrata sikutundo rabadiundai kitakawa sakatatu neemoorundai..." etc.

As I kept going, the language started to flow out of me and I lost the sense of having to make it up because the words were flowing thick and fast, too fast for me to make up. I realised that I was now speaking a fluent language that I was controlling the speech but not the actual words. Now, because I spoke a sentence in tongues in public, as it were, I need to give the interpretation (because the Lord gave me that gift as well).

Here is the interpretation of the sentence I spoke"

"I lift my heart to you because you are a loving, gracious and compassionate Father, whose ears are always open to my prayers, and heart is open to fellowship with me."

Interpretation is not a direct translation. It is a faith interpretation in English that expresses the spirit of what is spoken. Notice that the interpretation is a prayer, because tongues is mostly prayer to God, and the interpretation is the same, except when the speaking in tongues is an intercession for the prophetic word to come forth. Then the interpretation is more like a prophecy.

My experience is unique to me. This is the way that the Lord guided me through to the gift of tongues. I have spoken many different languages since, depending on the nature of my praying.

I have also been used to guide others through to the gift of tongues and have had the joy many times of seeing people start to speak beautiful languages. It always amazes me as people exercise simple faith, the beauty and fluency of the languages that come out.

If you want help to speak in tongues, PM me. I don't want to publicise my method of assisting people, because there are too many who think that God has only one method of bestowing the gift and their comments tend to discourage and confuse people.

Receiving the gift of tongues involves some very simple steps of faith. We do the simple thing and God does the miracle. I have seen this happen time after time.

I hope this has been helpful to you.

If you read Acts 2, you will realise that God's time for giving the Holy Spirit was then. 2000 years ago. This means that God has already given it, and He is waiting for you to receive it. The delay is not that God has not given it to you. The delay is that you have not take the step to receive him into your life. The moment you receive Him, you are filled with the Spirit and are able to speak in tongues.

Then it is up to you to activate your faith and start speaking the language.

Hey, I sense that the person in question is seeking the gift of tongues. If that is the desire, then why would God say no, seek some other gift? The Scripture says earnestly desire the best gifts. This means to passionately desire the gifts that are the best for you, and if you think that the gift of tongues is the best one for you at this time, then you are obeying the Scripture by earnestly desiring it.

God will not refuse you under these circumstances.

But the gift of tongues may not be perceived as being the best for others, so because they think that everyone's experience has to be the same as theirs, they advice people to bypass tongues and seek some other gift.

I don't know of any unconfessed sins, I try to repent of all my sins daily or every two days at least. And I always ask for God to reveal to me through the Holy Spirit any sins I need to confess specifically by name, and I do when He brings them to my mind.

Here is something to chew on: If part of the role of the Holy Spirit is to help you live a holy life, then why wait until you some to some level of holiness before you can receive Him into your life? Perhaps receiving Him sooner, would help you progress in holiness and give you a lot of joy and peace as well!

Peter and the others didn't have much time to develop any level of holiness before they were filled with the Spirit on the day of Pentecost. But straight after he was filled with the Spirit, he was a changed man. The infilling of the Spirit can change a person overnight. So, you need the Holy Spirit right now to improve your holiness.

So, because Jesus has already given the Holy Spirit to you effective 2000 years ago, then why not just receive Him right now into your spirit? As soon as you do that, you are filled with the Spirit. You may not feel a thing, but I would guarantee that things will change dramatically in your life as a result of that simple step of faith.

I'll tell you what I will do. I have the faith to believe that if I impart to you the fullness of the Spirit from the Holy Spirit in me, through my computer to yours, and if you have the faith to receive the impartation, I fully believe that you will be filled with the Spirit to capacity, sense the presence and love of God, and you will experience a new freedom to speak in tongues. All you will have to do then is to start speaking in faith, and the words will flow out of you.

Ready?

Here's the impartation: (and this is for anyone else reading this as well)

"I impart to you the fullness of the Holy Spirit from the Holy Spirit within me. Receive the Holy Spirit into your spirit right now. I release your mind, and your speech abilities to speak in tongues right now. Receive the measure of faith and the freedom and confidence now, in the Name of Jesus!"

Now, I want you to put your hand on your computer monitor and say, "I now receive the impartation, and allow the fullness of the Holy Spirit to come right into my spirit. I now receive the measure of faith and the freedom to speak in tongues"

Then start trying to speak words that are not English. To help you do that, think of a prayer need that you feel passionate about. It might be a friend or relative that you really want Jesus to save. Start pleading with God to live the veil off them so they can see the truth of the Gospel, but instead of praying in English, speak words that express that strong desire of your heart. You will be amazed at the language that comes out of you when you pray in love for others. Ask God to fill you with love and compassion for the person you are praying for, and I will not be surprised that you will find it easy then to pray in tongues.

I hope this is helpful.
