We all know USS Enterprise, or Voyager or Discovery, or whatever, there are many different ship names...

I've always loved the wry oddball shipnames from Iain Banks' novels. The spaceships are artificially intelligent and seem to have their own particular sense of humor in naming themselves. Wikipedia has a nice list, but some of them have poopoo names, so no link.

I've always found the HMS Terror to be a great name. I'm sure the Brits felt it entirely appropriate for some antiquated reason, but you have to like a ship named The Terror. And given how it ended up, appropriately named I guess.

I believe her name was "Julie" (IIRC and god help me I was forced to watch that show more than I care to remember). And, no joke, I believe that she did suffer from a cocaine habit in the early 1980's . Oh, I have spent many wonderful days at the old HMS Terror Club in Singapore.

They looked for the Terror and the Erebus for almost two centuries. No one thought to ask the Innuit. It was right where they said it was. On a side note, the Royal Navy has just recently transferred ownership of them to the Canadian government.

I always liked "Petite Forte'" renamed the Island Mercy and the best ship I ever sailed aboard (she was a worn out olde tub but she was God's ship and that is what mattered).
