Genesis 22:8 “God will provide HIMSELF a lamb for a burnt offering”

A great prophecy concerning the deity of the Lord Jesus Christ has been destroyed in the modern versions. Abraham had been told by God: "Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of."

This entire historical event foreshadowed the Father offering up His Son as the lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world. "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." John 1:29

Notice Genesis 22:14 - "And Abraham called the name of that place Jehova-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen." In Genesis 22:2 God told Abraham to take Isaac his son and go "into the land of Moriah". Later on in the history of Israel, king Solomon began to build the house of the Lord. In 2 Chronicles 3:1 we are told: "Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah". Mount Moriah was in Jerusalem and this is where many centuries later God the Son became a curse for us (Galatians 3:13). God made Him sin for us, Who knew no sin (2 Corinthians 5:21) and the prophesy of Isaiah was fulfilled who said: "Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when Thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin..." (Isaiah 53:10)

Ephesians 5:2 tells us "Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour." Compare Genesis 8:20-21 where this phrase about "a sweet smelling savour" is first used in the Holy Bible - "And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, of of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the LORD smelled a sweet savour"

Even the type of the resurrection after three days is found here. Abraham decided in his heart that he would obey God and kill his own son. It was as good as done in Abraham's mind the night before. Then he arose early in the morning of the next day, took his son, clave the wood for the burnt offering and went unto the place of which God had told him. Then we are told in verse 4 "Then ON THE THIRD DAY Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. It was on this third day that the angel of the LORD again called unto Abraham and said "Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me." So even the type of the resurrection after three days is fulfilled in this passage in Genesis 22. Hebrews 11:19 tells us of Abraham's "accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure."

The verse that has been changed in the NKJV, NASB, ESV, NET and NIV and alters the full significance of the spiritual type being portrayed, is Genesis 22:8. In the King James Bible we read in verses 7 and 8: "And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God WILL PROVIDE HIMSELF A LAMB for a burnt offering." God will provide HIMSELF a lamb. This is the prophetic type as we are told in verse 14 "And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen." What took place in type here with Abraham and his son would be seen at a future time. That time was when the Lord Jesus Christ, God manifest in the flesh, died on Calvary for the sins of His people.

The popular modern versions either obscure or completely remove this prophetic truth.

NKJV says: "God will provide for Himself the lamb"

ESV- "God will provide for himself the lamb"

Holman Standard - "God Himself will provide the lamb"

NASB - "God will provide for Himself the lamb"

NIV - "God himself will provide the lamb"

Green's 'literal' -"God will see to the lamb for Himself"



The reading of "God will provide HIMSELF a lamb" is the reading of the 1917 JPS (Jewish Publication Society” and 1936 Hebrew Publishing Company) translations. They are not even Christians and yet they have it just as it is in the KJB. It is also the reading of the Revised Version of 1885 -”And Abraham said, God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son”, the ASV of 1901 (the predecessor to the NASB), the Lesser Bible 1853 - "God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt–offering", the Catholic Douay-Rheims of 1610 and the Douay version of 1950 - "God will provide himself a victim for an holocaust, my son", Webster's 1833 translation, A Conservative Version - "God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering", the KJV 21st century 1994, the Third Millenium Bible 1998, and the modern Hebrew Names Version- "God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering."

Also agreeing with the meaning found in the King James Bible is the 2011 Orthodox Jewish Bible, which reads: “And Avraham said, My son, G-d will provide Himself a seh (lamb) for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.” The Complete Jewish Bible of 1998 also reads the same - “God will provide HIMSELF the lamb for a burnt offering, my son”.

This is also the reading found in Lamsa’s translation of the Syriac Peshitta. It reads - “And Abraham said, God will provide himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.”

The KJB reading of God will provide HIMSELF a lamb teaches that the lamb who in the future would be sacrificed was God himself, not somebody else. Jesus Christ is God, the second person of the trinity, the creator, God manifest in the flesh. The true Bible itself is its own best commentary. In Acts 20:28 we read of Paul exhorting the elders to “feed the church of God, which HE hath purchased WITH HIS OWN BLOOD.”

However the NKJV, ESV, Dan Wallace and company’s NET version and the NASB say: "God will provide FOR Himself a lamb" while the NIV has "God himself will provide the lamb."

Do you see the change here? No longer can you use these modern versions to prove that Christ is God by referring to Genesis 22:8. The prophesy was not fulfilled here in Genesis 22. Abraham lift up his eyes and saw behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns, and he offered up the ram in the stead of his son. But a ram is not a lamb. The true lamb, who is also God Himself, is the Lord Jesus Christ.

Among the conflicting Catholic versions we see the same thing occurring. The earlier Catholic Douay Rheims of 1610 reads like the KJB, as well as the 1950 Douay Version, saying: “And Abraham said: God will provide HIMSELF a victim for an holocaust, my son.” But the newer Catholic versions like the New Jerusalem Bible 1985 and the St. Joseph New American Bible of 1970 both read - “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering.” This also is the way the Holman Standard Version of 2003 reads. Just by switching a word from one place to another the whole meaning is changed, and you can no longer prove that the true Lamb of God is the Lord Jesus Christ, who is God HIMSELF!.

The same thing is seen in the Spanish Bibles. The older Spanish Reina Valera of 1909 and 1960 read -”Y respondió Abraham: Dios SE proveerá de cordero para el holocausto, hijo mío. E iban juntos.” Do you see that little pronoun SE in the phrase “SE proveerᔠhere? This is called a reflexive verb, and it means that God will provide HIMSELF as a lamb. This is also the reading of the 2010 Reina Valera Gómez Bible.

However the newer Reina Valera of 1995 and the NIV Spanish version have changed all this. The 1995 Reina Valera now says: “Abraham respondió:—Dios proveerá el cordero para el holocausto, hijo mío.E iban juntos.” That little pronoun “SE” is now gone and it simply means God will provide the lamb for the burnt offering. No longer can you see the truth that it is God HIMSELF who will BE the lamb.

The same is true in the NIV Spanish edition where it says: “El cordero, hijo mío, lo proveerá Dios —le respondió Abraham.” = The lamb, my son, God will provide IT, Abraham answered him.”

The King James Bible exalts the Lord Jesus Christ to His rightful place as “GOD manifest in the flesh” - (See 1 Timothy 3:16 and compare the modern critical text versions.) And “there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.” - (See 1 John 5:7 and compare the modern critical text versions).

All the ancient versions agree,,,the pre-JPS Masoretic in English puts it like this...

22:8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together.

The LXX agrees...so why do you think the post Westcott/Hort translations all distort this verse? The translators all say it means the same thing. But does it? If it is taken in its original form it is amazingly prophetic is it not? In what I consider the distortions it makes the ram the lamb and no big deal. Abraham knowing this when God says "Because you have not withheld...I know you trust me" becomes meaningless. Why the "because"?

I think we should all go with the God will provide Himself a lamb for the offeringtranslation since that is what the originals actually say.

For this to be a specific prophecy it would have to read, "God will provide Himself *as* a lamb..." As it is worded, inserting the word "for" does not change the meaning or prophetic nature of the text. Just another attempt by the KJV-only crowd to pick a fight about something.

Hi Nilo. I know some people will dispute that Genesis 22:8 is necessarily saying that God Himself is the Lamb and you really cannot prove it either way. But this understanding that God Himself is the Lamb can only be seen in the KJB and other versions that translated it this way. The versions that say "God will provide FOR Himself a lamb" totally exclude this possibility. I believe the KJB has it right and it is actually a prophesy that God Himself IS the Lamb - Acts 20:28 "the church of God which He purchased with HIS OWN BLOOD."

One thing you can always depend on when it comes to someone saying how great the KJV is and how all other versions have changed what the bible says: they are always completely and utterly IGNORANT of the actual text of god's word in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek.

Let's have a look at Gen 22:8, shall we? And, no, let's not just look at English. Let's look at what predated the English by THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of years. Let's look at the HEBREW.

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם אֱלֹהִ֞ים יִרְאֶה־לֹּ֥ו הַשֶּׂ֛ה לְעֹלָ֖ה בְּנִ֑י

I'll break this down word-by-word, particle by particle.

וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙
- This is a verb of the root אמר, which means “to say, speak, talk, or think.”
- It is in the form that enlightened scholars now call “Past Narrative,” meaning, it is the only verb form in classical Hebrew that has no purpose other than to signal past tense. Older names for this include “waw consecutive” or “waw conversive.”
- The waw functions not as a subjunctive or conjunctive marker, but as a marker of past tense. Thus, there is no “and.” (Young's Translation = fail)
- It is third person masculine, referring to a single male speaker.
- It means “He said.”

אַבְרָהָ֔ם
- This is our subject. It follows after the verb.
- It means “Abraham.”
- Putting this first clause together, we get: Said Abraham, “...
- Making it more idiomatic English: Abraham said, “...

אֱלֹהִ֞ים
- Now we begin the content of what Abraham said.
- It begins with a subject: “Elohim”
- This means either “god” or “gods” depending on context and verb use.
- Typically in Hebrew narrative, you have a verb come before the subject (see “Said Abraham” above). Here, however, we see the subject coming first. This is important. When the subject is “fronted,” this gives emphasis. Kind of like if I were to say, “Now I'm going” instead of “I'm going now.” By shifting the “now” to the front, I put emphasis on the fact that I really, truly am going right this moment, right this instant! Whereas by saying “I'm going now” does nothing more than inform someone that I'm leaving. So here, we see emphasis placed on Elohim. Elohim is going to do something, not Abraham or anyone else.
- What will Elohim do?

יִרְאֶה
- This is a verb of the root ראה, which means “to see/perceive/look/gaze/consider/observe.”
- It does not mean “to provide.” (KJV = fail)
- It is a third person masculine singular imperfect.
- It means “he will see” or “he will look.”
- Adding our previous subject to it, we get: “Elohim will see” or “Elohim will look.”
- Making it more idiomatic in English: “God will see” or “God will look.”

brandplucked noted that Gen 22:14 is important. He's right! So let's look at it:

“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehova-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.”

One important thing to note right away is what makes this place special: it is the place where YHWH has SEEN or LOOKED. That is the same verb used in 22:8 where it says “God will SEE/LOOK.” The place isn't called “it will be seen by God” because in 22:8, “God will provide” (Bad KJV!). It is called “it will be seen by God” because in 22:8, “God will see.”

What will God see? What is the direct object?

לֹּ֥ו
- Here we have a prepositional lamed (for) with a third-person masculine singular suffix (him/it).
- A lamed comes after the verb “to see” to indicate the direct object of the verb. One can either ignore the lamed and translate it “Elohim will see” or include it and translate it: “Elohim will look for.”
- The suffix is the direct object, signaled by the lamed, in order to make sense of the verb. What is God going to see? He is going to see “it” or “him.” - Putting it all together, the Hebrew says: “Elohim will see it/him” or “Elohim will look for it/him.”

Again, this is nothing different than what we have in 22:14: “In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.”

“It” is the direct object. “It” shall be seen. This “it” is the same as the “it/he” in 22:8. It/he is what is seen/looked for.

What is it/he? The Hebrew tells us specifically:

הַשֶּׂ֛ה
- the lamb
- this masculine singular noun is what the masculine singular pronoun “he/it” is.

But not just any lamb!

לְעֹלָ֖ה
- prepositional lamed (for) plus noun (burned offering)
- putting it all together very literally: “Elohim will see it: the lamb for a burned offering.”
- making it more idomatic in English: “God will look for the lamb for a burned offering.”

22:14 says “In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.” What is “it”? The lamb! The lamb for the burned offering will be seen on the mount of the LORD! This is Yeshua!

בְּנִ֑י
- means “my son.”

Putting it all together, the Hebrew says:

Abraham said, “God will look for the lamb for a burned offering, my son.”

That is why Moriah is called the place where it (the lamb of God!) will be seen.

The KJV completely distorts a clear prophecy of Christ by changing the verb from “to see” to “to provide” and changing the text from “him/it” to “himself.” So instead of Abraham prophesying that he/it, the lamb, will be seen on Moriah (and thus, the coming of Christ!), the KJV says that “himself” (god) will “provide” a lamb for a burned offering, which means nothing more than god making sure people have what they need to worship him.

But since you have NO Bible at present that you believe is the infallible words of God that you can show us, maybe you should just go ahead and make up your own bible version you can be happy with. You might even manage to sell a few copies to other discontents or the curious, and make a few bucks.

Thanks for posting all this information, I really find it interesting. I'm going to have to do some homework this weekend and look into the accuracy of the KJV. Especially since I'm considering making it my primary reading Bible. I've only been a Christian for a few years and never had any experience with the KJV but the few times I have chosen to read from it, there is just something about it that calls to me.

I agree that this is a *type*. But it is not a prophecy of the Incarnation.

I agree...most types are not prophecies they are foreshadows...passing through the Red Sea was a "type" of which Baptism is anti-type (the truest form)...Nebi and Antiochus and Titus are all "types" of the as yet future "man of sin" that "wicked one" but are not in themselves prophecies.

I would like to add that in the Spanish Reina Valera Version "Dios se proveerá DE cordero..." means "God will provide a lamb for himself". To say that God himself will be the lamb the phrase should read "Dios se proveerá COMO cordero..."

Actually this is nothing more than another "KJV Only" bogus assertion.

This is not a prophecy at all but it is indicative of Abraham's faith in God.

What's really great about this is Abraham's faith in God, because he knows Isaac is a child of promise. God had already promised Abraham, that "through Isaac your descendants shall be named" (Gen 21:12). .

Even though he knew God had told him to take Isaac and offer him as a burnt offering, Abraham is standing on faith that God would do just as he promised in Isaac. His faith is demonstrated in stating to Isaac that "God would provide a lamb for the burnt offering".

This is why Abraham is "the father of the faithful"!!!

While not a prophecy...this is a foreshadowing of God offering His only Son.

Now brandplucked quibbles about the KJV vs other translations...but is that true?

Read these translations yourself, and you will find that brandplucked "swallows a camel and strains at a gnat" in some cases...as with the NASB

I read the NASB...lets see the story by both the KJV and the NASB:

And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you.

Now...please take note of how DECEPTIVE brandplucked has been with the NASB! It reads basically the same as the KJV!!!

The NASB...even in it's NASB 1995 translates the same way.

Brandplucked...you have been "weighed in the balances, and found wanting"!

Now...a tranlation you might like that is more true to the original is Young's Literal Translation because it seeks to show exactly how the Hebrew reads:
And it cometh to pass after these things that God hath tried Abraham, and saith unto him, `Abraham;' and he saith, `Here [am] I.'
2 And He saith, `Take, I pray thee, thy son, thine only one, whom thou hast loved, even Isaac, and go for thyself unto the land of Moriah, and cause him to ascend there for a burnt-offering on one of the mountains of which I speak unto thee.'
3 And Abraham riseth early in the morning, and saddleth his ass, and taketh two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and he cleaveth the wood of the burnt-offering, and riseth and goeth unto the place of which God hath spoken to him.
4 On the third day -- Abraham lifteth up his eyes, and seeth the place from afar;
5 and Abraham saith unto his young men, `Remain by yourselves here with the ass, and I and the youth go yonder and worship, and turn back unto you.'

Notice Youngs's and the NASB read virtually the same at verse 8!
