Ok I guess I won't post any freshly baked bread, muffins, cookies etc...:p

Oh, my! Not freshly-baked bread ... please!

I'm the type that will eat almost anything that grows out of the ground in a garden, with the exception of tomatoes.

I especially like green onions, broccoli and cauliflower.

I also love fish.

My downfall is salt.

I salt everything I eat ... heavily.

Even ice cream.

When I told my pastor that, he said, "Well, the Bible says we are the salt of the earth, but you need to cut back on it. Use sea salt instead of table salt."

If my momma got her hands on you, she would cure your salt addiction. :p
Yes, use sea salt if possible. But somehow you need to train your taste buds to enjoy food in it's natural state without salt. (That was a lecture from me haha)

We normally buy fish from the market but one day I bought some pan sear by
Hi liners. It looked delicious on the box. When I cooked it, it was covered in this white goo...I don't know how else to explain it. It looks so gross. Has anyone else seen that on fish? It was Salmon. But in all my years of cooking Salmon, I have never seen this white stuff on it.

We don't have goats but my neighbor has a few dozen. My parents raise brahmin cows. If I remember I'll upload some pictures of their calves tomorrow.
I would love to see them. :)

I found a picture of our outdoor chicken run. This is where we keep meat birds as they tend to be really dumb as they age.

Sounds to me like she's a wise woman!

Thanks, but give me a pepperoni & anchovy pizza any day! :)

I don't know what it is.

I just scrape it off.

I didn't know where to post this...it's farming related haha. Farming can be a complicated science.

I'm not sure how many people eat organically here but I thought I would post a picture of a purely organic , free range chicken (left) vs a normal store bought turkey. (Right)
Can you see the differences?

I have noticed just recently that the Chicken I get at the store has a lot of water in it. Cooking it, it never really browns and it leaves a huge puddle of water in the pan.

As someone who has raised chickens to eat, let me say it is a whole lot easier to get your chicken at the store all ready to cook. It is a long, messy job to butcher and clean a chicken. That having been said, I love the little critters and the flavor is sooo much better. The eggs are amazing too.

It is endlessly fascinating to watch them. I like to let them roam free all over the place and my wife likes them all penned up. So we compromise and I "accidentally" leave the door open from time to time so they can have their freedom and she doesn't get too mad at me as long as they aren't out every day. One bonus is that they keep the Grasshoppers down as well as other insects and they are good at cleaning up table scraps. I love to cut a water melon in half and give it to them. It's like Piranhas with wings. They polish that melon off in minutes.

I was recently reading about that...water injected into the meat to make it look more plump. There has been some controversy in Canada about I think it was Maple leaf farms that had been abusing their birds as well. I have heard store bought chicken can be chewy and taste almost mushy. If it leaves a lot of water in the pan, are you able to make a good gravy?

Yes, it's a smelly, disgusting job to slaughter chickens...plucking feathers and gutting them...Bleeck. I make myself scarce during that season.

Oh man, I know! They love watermelon! They eat like pigs and even get into the pig slop. It's always so gross to see them scratching and poking in the fields. I don't want to know what they are eating.

Farm fresh eggs are so amazing. The yolks are such a nice orange colour. :)

That white stuff is albumen, the same protein that makes the white of chicken eggs. It exists in the salmons blood if im not mistaken.

I think they are adding a lot of water to make it plump but also to weigh more so they get more money. It's a recent ting just in the last year or two. If there was an organic free range producer nearby I'd definitely fork over more money to get those birds already butchered. I've read that free range chickens are one of the better profit making enterprises on a farm. They not only eat for free but fertilize the ground with their droppings. I live in the desert but if I lived say in Oregon or Washington I'd have more chickens. Our winters are so brutal here. It is regularly 30 below zero. It costs a lot to feed them in the winter.

What are the nutritional differences, between a chicken like Jennae's, and one from the store?

Jennaes' chickens are free.

So you can save your money and become a Flintstones Kid™.

Thanks. I was curious so I researched a few sites online and they said the same thing. I never knew that. It seems if you marinate your fish, it tends to not do that. :)

As far as nutritional differences, I think it has to do with the quality of meat.
Certified organic meat must meet certain standards. No hormones, steroids, antibiotics, and no water injected into the meat. The birds cannot be fed GMO corn or soy or any feed with antibiotics, pesticides etc.
The meat tends to be leaner and a more healthier protein.

Free range birds are one of the easiest and low cost animals on the farm. They take the least amount of work to keep, are virtually free to feed and benefit the farm...eating insects and offering free organic fertilizer. They also are a short commitment to keep. We slaughter all the meat birds before winter. We only feed our laying hens and roosters in the winter.

In Canada, are they permitted to give hormones, to any chicken?

In Sweden, we don't have as many organic chicken farmers, as it is too cold in the winter. I haven't noticed a difference, between the taste, or organic chicken, and non-organic. I have not had chicken, from Canada. What happens, when a chicken, on an organic farm, is ill?
