WASHINGTON — Gasoline prices could rise as much as 20 cents in the next few weeks as the price at the pump catches up with the recent surge in oil costs, the head of the Energy Department's analytical arm said Monday.
"We haven't seen the full pass-through yet," Energy Information Administration head Guy Caruso said.

Oil prices have risen approximately $20 a barrel in the past two months. Retail gasoline costs have increased about 30 cents a gallon in that time. The agency's models suggest gas prices will likely rise another 20 cents in the next two or three weeks to fully reflect the jump in oil costs, Caruso told reporters.

I am on the other side of this. I hope the price soon hits $5 or $6/gallon in the US. We talk about breaking dependance on import oil as if only some advanced new form of energy comes on scene. We could actually break it with oil if the price goes high enough. A new stop-gap idea, use US oil.

I have to agree that the price shouldn't drop again. I've thought a $1-$2 tax on a gallon of gas would be a great thing. The fact is, no matter how much people complain the price of gas is having very little negative effect on the rest of the economy.

It'd have to be more than $5-$6 a gallon. The supply/demand slope is VERY low, to the point that gas is more a need to people than it is a luxury. We raise the prices of gas to $3 a gallon and people are still putting more gas in than ever.

It'd have to be a SERIOUS spike, one that would really make people have no choice but to walk or take the bus instead of drive. I'd say that time would be at around $15-20/gallon.

I'm actually working on an idea now that is not gas dependent, its quite innovative, once I have more time to do research, by the beginning of next year and possibly by the end of next year I won't have to worry about "hydrogen cars" or gasoline prices. Such a horrible idea if every only knew.

Basically to get hydrogen fuel you have to run water through electrolysis the amount of energy needed for that process alone uses... guess what?!.............. fossil fuel! Thus hydrogen gas prices will still fluctuate as the oil company may desire. That amount of energy needed for electrolysis is immense! It nearly defeats the hydrogen at its atomic level... thus a waste of input energy vs output energy.

Electric cars is the direction needed to go, but we have too many rich people that don't want that as it allows anyone to be more self-sufficient and can save money... last thing they really want us to do when spending would be better for them.

You must be careful, if you solve the energy problem you will become a rich person.

We will see a steady slow rise in prices,
with a settle back occasionally, to appease the
addicts.

Until we decide to take a stand and demand our goverment to allow our people to pump, transport and
refine our own oil, we will pay whatever "they" want.
And have to deal with oil spills from inadequate ships.

Wouldn't it be better for us to do it right, then pay foreign that could care less about the enviroment?

I still think 5 ~ 6 bucks a gallon will do the trick, a $180.00 fill up in the family hummer. People may pay it for a while but soon enough market trends will push the issue up to the board rooms of corps such as GM and the like.
Think about it, consumers will fix this, hummers will be 10 cents on the dollar if you could even give one away.

The governemnt will never fix this, but consumption habit changes will.

I would rather go to the break point today than to send another penny to the mideast.

I was given an SUV in high school when gas was a $1.00 a gallon, I can't afford a new car at this point in my life. You aren't just hurting rich snobs that drive hummers when you suggest hiking up gas prices to punish them...

I don't want to punish anyone, I want to live to see the US energy indenpendant again. Our current situation can't be sustained.

We're draining the world's oil, so that when that runs out, THEY depend on us... and pay back is a b***, to say the least... At least that's what I think they have in mind.

I'm sure the mass-transportation is much better there too.
You think your town has bad public transportation?

Check out Las Vegas' CAT bus system... makes the New York subway system look amazing in comparison.

And what happens to all those people making $8 an hour driving a 15 year old car to work?

Not necessarily…

Scientists in Australia say they have have made a breakthrough in the efficiency of using sunlight to generate hydrogen from water. It may be a step toward an affordable source of clean energy.
…
Nowotny and Sorrell announced their breakthrough today at the International Conference on Materials for Hydrogen Energy, hosted by the University of New South Wales in Sydney. They believe they have found a way to considerably improve the productivity of the solar hydrogen process (using sunlight to extract hydrogen from water) using a device made out of titanium dioxide.

Electric cars is the direction needed to go, but we have too many rich people that don't want that as it allows anyone to be more self-sufficient and can save money... last thing they really want us to do when spending would be better for them.

I really don’t buy any of these oil company/who killed the electric car conspiracy theories. The main problem electric cars now have is range and (to a lesser extent) cost. IMO once battery tech can give a five seater electric car a range near enough to 1,000klm it’s game over for petrol. The only choice then will depend on whether tech like the example above has developed enough to allow hydrogen to be a competitor or not.

I wished I lived in New York, the subway system is amazing. Think about it, no need for cars. No car notes, insurance, or need for gas. I have visited NYC before and it was a heck of a bargain using public transportation. The only downside to NYC is the rent/mortgage. If I wasn't so afraid of motorcycles and if I didn't have a kid, I would certainly buy one. Too bad people don't travel via horses anymore. :(

I use, by my estimate, about 600 gallons of gasoline per ear. Right now that means about 150 dollars a month for the gasoline bill. The problem is that, like others said, gasoline isn't something you just cut back on. It would take a massive restructuring of society to reduce miles driven. I will soon be moving closer to school, which will cut down on miles driven. But then I'll live 15-20 miles away from my parents and grandparents, which means driving to see them. Some of my friends will live 15 miles west of me, some will live 10 miles east of me. I don't drive just for the heck of it. When possible, I carpool. But my only option for cutting back on gasoline use is to spend more time at home by myself and less time seeing family and friends. Few if any people are going to make that decision. I'll go without on other things and spend less money before I cut people out of my life to save a buck.

And there are areas of the country where mass transportation does not exist. I worry very much about what these oil prices are going to do to the economy. People around here have very low wages, for the most part, and many don't have a choice but to drive long distances to work.
