Hi Family,

What biblically is a cus word?

What makes some words a cuss word and others not?

~Natsumi Lam~
Anything that the culture you live in deems a perverse or filthy word. If it's not something you can say in a professional environment, it's most likely a cuss word. The Bible says to avoid foolish talk and jesting, which don't edify.

The Bible says that foolishness is sin. So joking and saying inconvenient things can also be sin alongside actual cuss words.

And there is taking the Lord's name in vain, either by taking a false oath in his name, or using his name as an expletive.

Language considered profane. Though I'm sure the concepts were the same, the ancients did not use the same words people in modern times use.

Col 3:8 - But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth

There is no explicit biblical standard. It is as NM said in post #2 "Anything that the culture you live in deems a perverse or filthy word." and as HT said in post #3: "Language considered profane."

That is why between countries and cultures that have a common language, the same word can be considered just fine in one and obscene in the other.

I believe all the made up substitutes that people say in anger. For example say I stubbed my toes and shouted out 'orange', to me that would also be cursing. I believe any word we say in that context is the same. Because the behaviour behind the phrase we used is cursing.

I might even go as far to say even sentances said in anger could go as far as to fall in that category.

Anyone who abbreviates "curse" as "cuss" should be sent straight to hell in my opinion.
Good thing the Bible doesn't say, "Don't say 'cuss' and thou shalt be saved." Whew.

I think hatred spawns cussing. So in this sense even substitute cuss words are .... etc.
Even reading those examples is hard for me because they are minced oaths and give me the same unease in my core as seeing blasphemy

There is a difference between cursing, and cussing.

Cursing is to pronounce anathema on someone - a definite sin as we are to pray for those who are lost that they also might be saved - not damn them to hell.
'
Cussing is different, and that is vulgar language.. that is less of a sin I think, more it is something we don't want to do as ambassadors of Christ.

Yh but I'm in the UK. We say swearing and rarely use the word c**s (I think it is swearing, if not it is unladylike to say) and curse seems to be used for a curse. However we have the phrase curse-words although it is a little archaic now.

Well different ways of saying those two things are understandable.

I just tried to show the difference as there are two things usually lumped into cursing, when cursing would technically only be referring to one, biblically speaking.

Googled it. It doesn't say it is 'vulgar' slang so maybe not swearing. Maybe I can use other synonyms like profanity, blasphemy to distinguish, or write curse-words in full.

Thanks.

Here..

Really bad sin = Definition of ANATHEMA

See definition 1a and 2 a, b and c.

The above is really sin. We are supposed to pray for everyone no matter what to be reconciled to Christ. That is cursing which is a sin.

Bad language = the big 7 dirty words (Google it) is wrong to use as an ambassador of Christ to the world, but isn't a really bad sin.

That is how I see the biblical language which is used.

If it's in the bible, it's not a curse word. If it's not in the bible and you aren't sure, try posting the word on CF. If when you post it, it comes up something like "[bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]", it's probably a curse word. If not, you're in the clear! Good luck! :)

Not so sure about that. The word A$$ is in the bible....yet i do not feel comfortable using it....and do not use it.....and i think some would consider being called one insulting...

Ass? As in, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's ass? I don't find it vulgar at all. It might be insulting, but that's not cursing.

Proverbs 26:3 is one of my favourites! "A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back."

I think these days, we have become too sensitive. If it's in the bible, how can it be bad? :)

(P.S. It also shows up on CF, so it's definitely not a curse word! ;) )
