Fun fact: John Carter from Mars not only served as one of the sources of inspiration for "Star Wars", but also contributed to the creation of "Superman".

Remember how Superman originally couldn't fly, but instead just possessed the strength to jump REALLY high? Yup, he pulled a John Carter right there.
Did not know that John Carter was the one who inspired Superman - but in remebering the original abilities of Superman, it does make sense.

Of course, personally, I think John Carter is way more engaging....:) Much more thrilling in story as well as in the love interest too...for Superman can never compare to the epic nature of being a warlord that came to another world nor can he compare with the way Martian culture is astounding...

Hm, I didn't know that.

That's interesting, and it makes sense given the whole "able to leap tall buildings in a single bound" line.

I wonder how he became able to fly. Was there another superhero that could, and that power was added to Superman's repertoire?

eudaimonia,

Mark
I wonder as well. ...although I must say that Superman already had way too many powers and isn't really engaging with all of them.

Regarding oversexualization of female characters: it is kinda disconcerting to see how many artists try to twist the human spine into a "T&A-pretzel", just so that female superheroes can point BOTH their chest and their behind at the reader simultaneously.

Here's a parody of what it'd look like if they did the same to the male characters. The result is... quite disconcerting, really.
avengers_booty_ass_emble_by_kevinbolk-d4hb4xl-600x463.jpg
Very astute point as it concerns the issue - reminds of what another said when saying it's odd how little focus they give to females in comics when it comes to battle armor even when the men are geared up because it's assumed that a lot of armor is needed to protect in a fight - lest you're that good and only need slim body protection

Well, I grant you it wasn't awful. Valeria was a throwaway character with a Brooklyn accent and the pacing was amazingly slow.

Still, the Governator did pretty well. And...James Earl Jones.

That second movie attempted to be a D&D knockoff. That one was just ridiculous.

Conan could be done a lot better today with CGI and better writing and fight choreo.

I admit I didn't see the most recent one. I didn't feel very motivated, to be honest. And then my son's review consisted as "Meh", so I felt less motivated.

As for comic book religions, I'm still rooting for Odin & Company. Old fondnesses for pagan pantheons die hard lol

I love the first Conan film for its music, and would love to see Schwarzenegger return to the role as "King Conan", now that he's the right age for the part.

Oh this! ^^^^

Just get a decent writer and director. There are more available these days that understand the genre.

Do you know what the discarded Oliver Stone draft to the first Conan-film looked like? Stone was addicted to cocaine and other drugs at the time, and it shows, apparently: he transfered the story to a post-apocalyptic future and has Conan battle an army of ten thousand pig-headed mutants. It was also supposed to be four hours long.

It couldn't be worse than four hours of slaying orcs in leather, could it?

The concept did sound quite bad, and would likely not have been even a hundredth as good as the LOTR movies, if that is what you are implying.

While the Conan movie was not based closely on the Conan novels, it did at least give the impression of the right sort of setting. The Stone version would have taken that away. The result might as well have been another Mad Max film.

Glad they made that choice...

The movie would have been horrible and an epic concept would be lost....

That would have been amazing as well - especially considering how they now have him in the role of an older gentleman currently...

the new Ms. Marvel is a Pakistani American, and they also managed to give her a costume that doesn't oversexualize her:

Ms._Marvel_Vol_3_1_Adams_Variant_Textless.jpg

Don't get me wrong: I LOVE Wonder Woman. But when one artist tried to give her pants, the DC readers freaked, and she quickly reverted back to her bikini briefs.
Nice to know about the new Ms.Marvel being from Pakistan - as it's amazing how many variations of the character there have been from differing ethnicities.

Did not know that Ms. Marvel was made black recently - but that's cool to know. I know the older version of Ms. Marvel was black - known as Monica Rambeau - although it gets difficult trying to keep up with the complicated history of those bearing the title "Marvel" ...Monica was one of the more interesting...

That said, I do think it's interesting to see that Wonder Woman herself is going through a major make-over in her costume..

Her costume has gone through so many variations over the years...

What on earth are those spikes on WW's bracelets? Is it because she's replaced Ares as god of War?
I figured they were simply like arm swords for her to do battle and fight - but I don't think having them makes her less of a Wonder Woman character....

And technically, I have always had less concern for those things than the Star Spangled Banner theme she has - as I wondered "How in the world does Wonder Woman come from Greek culture and yet has a costume that represents America?"

Although it is intense, her spikes are not that radical when seeing her other costumes...

Wonder Woman's new costume is pretty interesting....although some of her antagonists are just as impressive...

I remember the Turok games. they were pretty violent to be honest i still remember how the bodies would twitch around. never knew they made a comic book as well.
Forgot to mention that as much as others are shocked by the violence with Turok killing reptiles like Dinosaur creatures, there have been other comic series (with games following them) which have been violent as well...some of them being ones you'd least expect.

In example, one of the main ones coming to my mind is known as the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Of course the series many are familiar with are the cartoon versions of the characters -

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeI35elq_A8

But not not many are aware of the original origins of the show, which at one point became something that many Christians had issue with.

Fun fact: in the original comics, the substance that mutates the turtles into anthropomorphic creatures stems from the very canister that blinded Matt Murdock, a.k.a. "Daredevil".

Eastman and Laird have confirmed that the similarity was intentional, and that they did intend for that character to be Matt Murdoch (without naming him, for obvious copyright reasons).

I was a HUGE fan of the 1980s cartoon series, (although the humor eluded me, or rather struck me as profoundly unfunny,) and was quite shocked when I got my hands on a copy of the original series, finding the violence depicted therein more than a little disturbing.
