Well, be careful what you say! Politicians are supposed to meet our demands, and if you convince everyone out of building potentially 3 million houses, and thus, dropping prices by flooding the market, then we can be stuck with 400k plus housing prices for good.

...But maybe we have some real estate people here, who don't want home prices being lowered. I'm not one of those people, though.

...And our kids should be able to afford houses for their families, without having to invite in random strangers as room mates to live with in order to make the payment.
My comments have nothing to do with real estate speculation. Building just costs money. Construction is one of the few (maybe the only?) industries that hasn’t seen any productivity growth in the last couple decades. Maybe there are gains to be had with modular or pre-fab construction, but the standard method of stick building onsite is just going to get more expensive.

the American Enterprise Institute, is taking the idea seriously. The group's housing center recently published an ambitious blueprint called "Homesteading 2.0" that identifies hundreds of potential locations for 20 new "freedom cities" and sites for 3 million new homes on federal land.
Of course they do. I'm sure they are willing to advocate for anything that reduces the amount of federal land.
Prospective sites for the new cities are largely in Western states, where demand for homes has surged and the US government controls much of the land mass.

So now you know too. (I like how you can spot individual federal properties like national parks and forests and military installations .)

Therefore?

Tariffs are paid by the American importers, either companies or individuals. So it is just another taxation on Americans.
I have not felt it yet. When should I expect to feel the hurt?

$15 Billion And Climbing: Trump’s Tariffs Deliver Record High Revenue

U.S. Customs duty collections soared more than 60% in April, marking the highest monthly revenue haul in terms of dollars in American history.
This is what happens when the Govt increases taxes, the government collects more money.
The money is coming ultimately from the pockets of the USA consumers, who bear the brunt of higher prices (psst - inflation).

Money goes from the USA public and into the hands of the USA government, from there, the bulk of it goes to the wealthy billionaires under the guise of reduced income taxes. Meanwhile the cost of living goes up, and the poor and middle class struggle.

I never thought I’d see Republicans so happy to celebrate a tax on the American people.
They also now celebrate Russia and Putin, and celebrate insurrectionists and pardons of insurrectionists and pardons of people stealing from the Build the wall foundation. The celebrate the intimidation of Canada and the removal of sanctions on Russia, and the degrading of Ukraine and the Ukranian president.

Whatever Trump says and does is celebrated, no matter what he says and does.

Because American companies won't be producing their products there anymore. You know, "designed in the USA, manufactured in China"?
I am pretty sure chinese and vietnamese companies are perfectly capable of designing and producing things that we would buy.

Unfortunately I have too much dignity, and self respect and grace and curtesy and empathy and common sense and consistency and respect for others...
to make that work.
How unfortunate indeed. You won't be getting invited to the vecherinka then.

Not again! I have all my fingers and toes crossed and yet the invite seems to be getting lost in the mail.

I'm curious, where will the water come from for these new Freedom Cities? Most of the areas where these Freedom Cities can be built are areas which get their water from the Colorado River -- and have little natural water since that land is in deserts or is semi-arid. If you aren't aware, the Western states are already being told to cut water usage as Lake Mead and Lake Powell, two of the largest lakes in the US, which dam the Colorado river, are at extreme low levels.

What kind of question is that. I cannot know when one specific individual will feel the impact of anything related to economy.

It is like asking me when you will lose your job in a recession.

$15 Billion And Climbing: Trump’s Tariffs Deliver Record High Revenue

U.S. Customs duty collections soared more than 60% in April, marking the highest monthly revenue haul in terms of dollars in American history.
According to newly released Treasury Department data reviewed by Bloomberg, at least $15.4 billion in customs duties and related excise taxes flowed into federal coffers last month, $6 billion more than the month before. This spike in revenue coincides with the first wave of President Donald Trump’s newly implemented tariffs taking effect. Those include a renewed 25% tariff on steel and the “universal” 10% tariff Trump announced on April 2.
Taxation on Americans.

That higher tariffs are leading to higher excise revenues isn't surprising. But, there's other likely effects (that aren't surprising either).

In mid April, the Penn Wharton Budget Model published 'The Economic Effects of President Trump’s Tariffs'. It estimates the US tariff plan (as of 08-Apr-2025) would raise somewhere between $4.2 and $5.2 trillion in revenue over 10 years, while cutting imports by USD6.9 trillion.

Depending on the extent that the tariffs are passed through to consumers, the other impacts by 2034 are estimated as:

1.7% to 2% fall in US GDP
1.6% to 2.8% fall in US wages
3.7% to 4.5% fall in US domestic consumption
3.6% to 4.4% fall in capital stock

A middle class (2 income) household is expected to suffer an economic burden of $58,000 the lifetime of the tariffs. That's the equivalent of losing about $34 per week in higher prices, lower wages, lower working hours and reduced economic activity.

The modelling shows that the negative impacts on the economy would be about twice as large as increasing the corporate tax rate from 21% to 36%.

Similarly, Yale estimates an average US household will have its real, disposable annual income lowered by about $4,700 in a full pass through scenario. This falls to about $2,700 per year after substitution effects and behaviour shifts take hold (which could be up to 15 years). GDP could fall by 1.3% to 2%.

The Tax Foundation expects tariffs on just China, Mexico and Canada would generate ~$212 billion in additional government revenue over 10 years, but also cut GDP by 0.8%, cut capital stock by 0.6% and lead to productivity losses about 671,000 full time

Last time this was discussed the water was to come from either cutting off Californias water rights or building desalination plants there to send water to current empty federal land near Saint George Utah. It’s absurd schemes all the way down.

Though it was the Mississippi? Such a waste sending all that water out to sea when it’s so simple to catch it all and pump it over to the Great Basin. Make the American water great again! Like the Aral Sea!
