Common law marriage still doesn't avail the couple of all the rights of a married couple. They can't, in at least three states for example, make medical decisions on behalf of the "spouse" in life-threatening situations.

Correct. The exact protections afforded by Common Law do vary from state to state. It is necessary to check state law before deciding to enter into a Common law marriage. It is also worth noting that the number of states recognizing Common Law marriage has declined over the years.

Also, common law marriages are not binding on any other state, which means that if the couple moves or travels extensively, situations could arise that prevent them from acting in each others' best interest.

Again correct. That is why I specifically used the words "in those states" in my earlier post.

It seems to me that the relevant scripture is in Genesis, Chapter 38:16-17.
Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law, he went over to her by the roadside and said, “Come now, let me sleep with you.”
“And what will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked. “I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said.
You can sleep with your girlfriend if you promise to give her a goat.

I hope you are being sarcastic. However, the Law was not yet given at this time.

There are plenty of people trying to look for loopholes in the Bible to justify their actions. As others have stated, the answer is "No" to someone having sex with their girlfriend before marriage. There are so many references in the Bible about fornication that it is hard to miss. Also, just because a lot of people perform an action that is sinful still does not make it righteous.

Thought I'd reverse the thought to what I believe the Bible says.

There are so many people adding sins to the Bible so they can think they are more righteous then their brethern. The answer is Yes to those that love and not hurt the other before marriage. There are so many references to prositution (fornication) in the NT that its hard to miss. Just because someone says prostitution means pre-marrital sex doesn't make it so.

So does fornication mean fornication or prostitution???

I say it means prostitution for these reasons.
200BC When the LXX translated the Hebrew Bible into Greek. The used the porneia family of 5 woods to translate the Hebrew words for prostitution.
NT times: The Greek mean prostitution.
Jerome's Latin Valgage Translation about 300AD used a Latin word that the Christians were using to designate prostitution.
When the KJV was translated in 1600AD the Oxford Dictionary produced by the famous college in England had the meaning as prostitution.
Today if you go to translate.google.com and translate prostitution from English to Greek you will get porneia.

But American Christians don't like that and so in my life time there has been two meanings: premarital sex and sexual immorality. So which am I to believe a language that is constantly changing its meaning or the Greek that has had the same meaning for at least 2200 years.

I agree fornication in no way means premarital sex, I think the only true way to judge it is by the law of love which states "love does no harm, thus it fulfills the law." So the question is how can premarital sex be harmful? The big two..

Certainly your at a risk for STD's, most are still epidemic.

Risk of pregnancy, higher abortion rate among nonmarried. Certainly raising kids out of wedlock causes some harm due to our culture to kids, although not like it once was. If you get someone pregnant, are you ready to parent, responsible, can provide, etc....Most teeens aren't ready.

Do you know what "fornication" means? In the Greek the word is porneia from which we get the word "pornography." Porneia means "illicit sexual intercourse" meaning premarital sex, homosexual conduct, adultery, bestiality, incest, and it also means, metaphorically, the worship of idols. "Illicit" means "unlawful." God's law prescribes sexual activity for a married couple only. Therefore, anything outside of marriage is "fornication." Let's not get into a marriage definition discussion either, as that will get the thread shut down.

Actually they're are no scriptures that define pornia as premarital sex. In biblical times pornia was illegal sexual acts and the bible defines each one clearly.

1) Sex during women's menstruation.

2) Adultery

3) Pagan sex goddess prostitution.

4) Pederasty

If you are a multi religionist do what you like, your going to hell anyway.

It even states in "forgotten the reference" that the church is to deal with sexual immorality within the church and leave the hell bound people to their own wretched destruction.

If you want to be a Christian, the answer is No.

I know Paul said the church was to deal with Christians that were visiting the temple prostitutes at the fertility temples. I'm not aware that the Bible teaches we are to leave those bound for hell alone. Unless your thinking of those that have sinned a sin unto death one epistle says.

In the OT if a man had intercourse with a woman he wasn’t married to he was required to pay a fine, marry her, and never divorce her.

In the NT Paul writes:
I Corinthians 7:8-9
8 To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single as I am. 9 But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
They key is, if you cannot exercise self-control with a woman you’re partial to, you should consider marriage.

Christians are bound by the law of love. Love God with all our heart, mind, and strength, and … love our neighbor (others). This girlfriend of yours, do you “love” her? I mean, really love her? If you can easily have intercourse with her without any social commitment, you should seek to love her more. As you grow in love, you’ll become closer. Also, you’ll begin to draw lines where they must be drawn out of love and respect for one another. Also, if you truly love her, you’ll begin wanting to marry her. If you can’t grow into true love with this girl, you’re just using her. That’s sin.

Seek to love. Seek to love God more also. If you truly love God, surely you’ll consider God’s admonitions to purity and to be holy as he is holy. Your desire to please Him will increase with time.

In all things, be motivated by love.

That’s what Christian living is about. If you desire to become a Christian, a true Christian, you’ll realize life is about loving God and others with as much as you can. To become a Christian, believe that Jesus was God in flesh, repent of your sin (confess it and try to do better), be baptized in the name of the Lord, and seek the infilling of God’s Spirit. Then love God and others with all of your being in all that you do.

And please, forgive me if I appear a bit judgmental. I'm a sinner too. In fact, we're all sinners. We've all failed God. We've all gotten tangled up in messes that take time to rectify. But we're trying to follow after God's Spirit and show love towards all, especially those we cherish in our lives. You're not the first couple to have premaritial sex. You'll not be the last. But, the question is what will become of your relationship? A beautiful love story of humanity, forgiveness, and grace? Or another tragic story of two people using and abusing one another?

If you choose to become a Christian, walk after the Spirit and seek love. Turn your lives around and make something beautiful out of this situation that testifies to the power of the love and grace only found in Christ.

God bless.
Heavenly Father, I pray that you draw this poster and his girlfriend closer to you. I pray that you fill them with your Spirit and that they might experience the joy and power of being one spirit with you. I pray that you fill their heart with boundless love towards you and others in their lives. Father, I pray that you make something beautiful out of this relationship. That this couple grows in love for you and in love for each other, a love that will bring wholeness and holiness. I pray that should their being together be your will, that you will lead them, guide them, and mold them into the couple you desire them to be, that they might show forth the wonders of your handiwork. I pray that if it be your will, Lord, that you will fashion them into the family you desire them to be, a family with a godly and grace filled legacy. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.

No.

If you do, you are saying: it is OK to have sex with any woman. That is a high risk on your earthly life and is deadly on your eternal life.

Lol. Really? Expressing love with a partner in a monogamous relationship is the same as having sex with a hooker in a dark alleyway?

I can't get behind that.

If you're in love with someone and want to have sex with him/her, then go for it.

I was kind of making 2 points here :)

1. If said, OP is not a Christian, imposing upon himself one tiny facet of the morality of God has absolutely no impact upon his eternal salvation.

2. We are to preach the Gospel, not morality to the Gentiles. They already reject our Gods morality. For it is only through the saving work of Jesus Christ does that person take on the righteousness of Christ.

God Bless

Ty

Do you have a biblical backing for that statement?
