Democrats have a near monopoly on comedy TV shows.

Republican comedy TV shows should be given equal time.

What can Republicans offer to make this happen?
Produce funny shows.

It might be noted that I often see humour in the posts of the more left wing members of the forum. But very little from the other side of the fence.

An interesting take on left wing v right wing comedy:

‘Gutfeld!’ May Be the New ‘King of Late Night’ for Total Viewers – in Other Ways Not So Much
Fox News Channel’s talk show had an average of 2.19 million viewers compared to CBS’ “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert’s” 2.16 million

Apparently, Gutfeld suffers from older viewers.

[4-April-2024] King Of Late Night Greg Gutfeld Signs New Multi-Year Deal With Fox News

"Fox News announced Thursday that it had signed Gutfeld! and The Five host Greg Gutfeld to a new, multi-year contract. The new deal comes after Gutfeld’s late night show ended the first quarter of 2024 as the highest-rated show in all of late night TV, outperforming CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live and Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, featuring the return (on Monday nights) of Jon Stewart."

So, in summary, both conservative media and democratic media have roughly equal viewership.

Where's the comedy in that?

-- A2SG, thought you wanted equal time for funny republicans.....
John Oliver just did a show about the need to
abolish the death penalty.

I wouldn’t call that easy to write jokes about.

True enough. John Oliver is very good at finding humor in the least humorous situations. That's a rare gift, though.

Plus which, John Oliver is not a Republican.

So....who on the right side would be as good as John Oliver at finding humor in a situation like Ukraine?

-- A2SG, or as funny......

Never heard of Dore, and only (barely) know Brand as an actor, so I have no idea what his politics are, or how good he'd be at standup or commentary.

But, regardless, what do you think could be done to get these guys a network show?

-- A2SG, realizing, of course, that ratings would ultimately decide whether they sink or swim......

I'd be fine with doing that.....

But....

I fail to see how that's gonna get a Republican a comedy show.

-- A2SG, let alone give it good enough ratings to keep it on the air.....

If its part of a deal to get Republican comedy on the air for
a number of years,
it doesn’t need to have good ratings.

But that's not how TV works.

If a show doesn't have good ratings, it doesn't get to stay on the air. Period. Even for streaming services, which don't depend on ratings the same way the traditional networks do, if a show isn't popular (ie watched by enough people), they don't keep making it.

It's not enough to find a funny Republican. You need to find a funny Republican that enough people (Republicans and Democrats) will watch regularly enough to garner the ratings.

'Cuz, if no one watches....that show goes away.

-- A2SG, to be replaced by something enough people WILL watch.....

PBS doesn’t care about ratings.

True, PBS is less ratings driven than other networks, but they're not completely immune. If no one watches a show, they'll still have to consider whether or not it's worth keeping it on the air. Sure, other considerations -- like cultural content, etc. -- may come into play, but even for PBS, if no one watches a show at all, unless they can find some specific reason to keep producing it, it's not likely to last very long.

Does that make them more likely to pick up a Republican comedy show, and keep it on the air, even if no one watches it?

I guess you'll have to see.

-- A2SG, but without the ratings, no one will be watching anyway, so not sure I see the point there.....
