NIV Zechariah 9:
New American Standard Bible:
There are two distinct animals mentioned in this verse: colt-donkey and mother-donkey. The king rides on the colt-donkey, possibly accompanied by the mother-donkey. Zechariah messianically prophesied Jesus' triumphal entry to Jerusalem. But In the NT, Mark, Luke, and John, all speak only of one animal. Mark 11:9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey [H2543 male donkey], on a colt [H5895 young donkey], the foal of a donkey [H860 female donkey].
Nevertheless, they have not denied the possibility of the presence of a second animal. Matthew mentions two animals (ESV) 21:7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it.
The last "them" refers to the cloaks.7 They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.
New American Standard Bible:
Jesus sat on the cloaks on the colt-donkey only.and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their cloaks on them; and He sat on the cloaks.
