Receptionism is one opinion among Lutherans, particularly common during the late Scholastic era in the 18th century, but it's by no means the only opinion (during the Evangelical Catholic revival, consecrationism became widespread). However, a sacrament has validity only through it's use, that is very true. The important thing is that the elements are treated in a reverent manner according to ones conscience, and that the consciences of others are respected.
