My mother has been in a wheelchair as long as I can remember. I grew up with this as normal. I can remember riding to kindergarten on her lap. Electric wheelchair combined with a close neighborhood = momma gets around. I know that some may not be able to deal with handicapped people in there home. I got in many schoolyard fights involving this. I love her fighting spirit, I love her tenacity, I love her. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
BTW If anybody wants to make fun of my momma, I'll meet them by the bike rack after school.
BTW there is a great book (I don't remember who wrote or illustrated it) called Momma Zooms. It is a great book for teaching children about disability.
