The Grand Canyon is not a misnomer of science, since it was not named by science, but by John Wesley Powell, a Civil War veteran and not a scientist.

Some years ago, I was in Phoenix for a conference. My wife--who's a good photgrapher--came with me. We took a day off to drive up and tour the Canyon. Without a doubt, it's very impressive. I wanted her to snap a photo of me with the canyon in the background. I found what I thought was a good spot near the rim. But she kept saying, "Move back!" "More!" "Still more!" "You've gotta get further back!" I wonder what she was thinking.
