Chesapeake officer sentenced to 25 years on child and animal sexual abuse charges

Timothy Newton pleaded guilty [to child sexual abuse of a family member] on Oct. 24, 2023.

He also possessed material involving animal sexual abuse and child sexual abuse as young as infants.

The Commonwealth pushed for an active sentence of 40 years, but instead the Judge Robert G. MacDonald sentenced him to 360 years with 335 years suspended, leaving only 25 years to serve.

That seems an odd sentence.

Usually in such cases it's 25 years before being eligible to apply for parole. Meaning a potential life sentence.
