Former Menominee County Sheriff’s Deputy and School Resource Officer Brian Helfert was sentenced to prison in Menominee County Circuit Court Thursday afternoon for a child sex crime charge a jury convicted him of in December.

Helfert was sentenced by Judge Mary Barglind for the charge of second degree criminal sexual conduct with a weapon. He was found guilty of committing the crime against a former student, ... who was a teenager at the time he said Helfert sexually assaulted him.

While the sentencing has concluded for this case, Helfert has been scheduled for another jury trial in July. In that case, he is charged with two counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct for the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old boy during the 2017-2018 school year. According to the criminal complaint, Helfert was a school resource officer at Blesch Intermediate School at the time, and the victim was a sixth-grade student.
