A basilica is a cathedral that has the honor of a special papal 'privilege', regardless of the size-- although most of them are larger. The pope can ONLY spend the night in a basilica. (The Vatican is a basilica). There are only a handful of basilicas in the US, so when there is a papal visit, he must stop at one of them for any overnight stays.benedictine said:I thought a Basilica was just a really big church/cathedral.
