Yes, they were traitors to the crown. That was the whole point of the war.

Anyone can leave. They just can’t take the states with them. That belongs to the United States.

It’s right there in the name.

That gave me a chuckle. Sherman presented Savannah, Georgia, to Lincoln as a Christmas present, and by his own admission essentially turned his troops loose on South Carolina. It's ironic that Sherman's March through Georgia is often remembered, but his march through South Carolina isn't.
