Over 80 years of hate for one country is kind of mind boggling.

The USSR earned the right to be hated by its oppression, corruption and proxy wars all over the planet. Also, it was one of the worst persecutors of Christians in living memory. Russian Orthodox Russia is a different kind of rival and not one to be hated. It models a different way of doing faith that would be more familiar to the old nationalisms of Europe in its heyday. But behind that is Putin's Real Politik that is looking to reestablish a Russian Empire that most Eastern European countries do not want. Also, it is directly responsible for the half a million deaths that have occurred as a result of invading its neighbor.

Wouldn't it be great if all the NATO countries would put as much into their defense budgets as they are supposed to do?

Both my countries of UK and Germany are meeting this target this year. The longer the war goes on the easier it will be to justify sustaining these levels. The elimination of naive politicians who have not yet grasped the new realities will take more time though.
