God spared Nineveh, the capital of Assyria

Jonah was contemporary with Jeroboam II. 2 Kings 14:

25 This Jeroboam restored the boundary of Israel from Lebo-hamath to the Sea of the Arabah, according to the word that the LORD, the God of Israel, had spoken through His servant Jonah son of Amittai, the prophet from Gath-hepher.

Jonah warned the Ninevite of the impending destruction of Nineveh. They repented, and God did not destroy them.

A few decades later, the Assyrian king Tiglath-Pileser III invaded the Northern Kingdom of Israel. Nineveh was the capital of the Assyrian Empire.
