And there's no rule that says a democrat can't vote for the Republican for speaker who has the majority of the votes in order to move things forward (and prevent the so-called govt. shutdown they claim to be afraid of).
If Jordan had the majority of votes he would be Speaker.

Nothing would burn down.

This is why consiracy theories that the Republicans will be cheating rampantly in the 2024 elections have traction. No one who claims to be the party of hard working Americans would ever go to face their voters in the next election after having just not done their job and honestly expect to win unless they already had it in the bag.

The Republicans aren't the ones complaining about a looming government shutdown.

Not entirely true. Jordan has earned the mistrust of people who think he will mess up the appropriations for the coming year.

“What Jordan would do to the appropriators is he would try to blow up all the appropriations bills. He was a thorn in their side,” Dent tells Andrea. “They're just returning fire. That's what they're doing here. Steve Womack of Arkansas, Kay Granger of Texas, Jake Ellzey of Texas — these are all appropriators — Diaz-Balart of Florida. They're really upset, obviously, and they're not going to be moved.” Johnson adds, “There’s a reason that Boehner called him a legislative terrorist. And I think we see why people don't want to support him.”

‘Rise of the House Appropriators’: GOP Strategists Notes ‘It Isn’t Terribly Sexy,’ But Serious Legislators Tanked Jim Jordan

And why have we had government shutdowns and a lot of the chaos over these past few years? It’s been the failure to have a working appropriations process

Are you saying democrats are inventing conspiracy theories? I've always been told that it's "everyone else" that does that sort of thing.

How about Donald Trump for speaker? Sounds reasonable to me.
The Speakership requires real, actual WORK, and deal-making skills beyond “let’s be reasonable, do it my way!”

If he can make deals and be reasonable as president (which he did), he can do so as House speaker as well. Maybe some of the democrats would actually cross the isle and vote for him.

He could make good deals but also rejected $5B for The Wall that Pelosi/Schumer had worked out because it contained provisions for the DACA “dreamers”.
His update of NAFTA with the USMCA was a good thing.
Trump has done good things.
Trying to remain in power after he had lost the 2020 Presidential election wasn’t one of them.

About a third of the 45 day reprieve has been wasted by GOP infighting.
With two-thirds gone, newly elected Speaker Johnson considers kicking the can for an additional 60 days.

Speaker Johnson suggests he’s open to short-term stopgap government funding measure until Jan. 15

“And the reason for that is it gets us beyond the end of the year push,” he continued. “And oftentimes, the Senate tries to jam the House and force an omnibus spending bill. We’re not doing that here anymore, we’re having single subject bills in our separate appropriations bills and so pushing that into January I think would assist us in that endeavor.”

Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was booted from the top leadership spot earlier this month after he brought to the House floor a “clean” short-term funding bill, known as a continuing resolution (CR) that averted a government shutdown just hours before funding was set to run out in a deal with Democrats.

I distinctly remember his making a deal that included appropriations for his big beautiful border wall - then reneging on it and shutting down the government himself (which he first bragged about and then tried to pin it on Pelosi) and ultimately wound up with considerably less for the wall.

Too bad his man got in.

Speaker Johnson suggests he’s open to short-term stopgap government funding measure until Jan. 15

"I don't even want to think about something lasting until January or April. That would be folly," Representative Andy Biggs told Politico, adding that there are at least five Republicans who don't want to see another stopgap measure into January. With only a four-seat majority, that would be enough House Republicans to tank Johnson's idea.

Republican Honeymoon With Mike Johnson Is Over

Speaker Johnson on GOP plan to avert government shutdown: ‘Trust us’

House Republicans have not decided on a strategy to keep the government funded with 11 days until federal funds lapse

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) urged the public on Tuesday to “trust us” as he floated a plan to fund the government that is unlikely to pass the Senate, increasing the odds of a shutdown just 11 days before funds lapse.

“I’m not going to tell you when we will bring it to the floor, but it will be in time, how about that? Trust us: We’re working through the process in a way that I think that people will be proud of,” Johnson said. The speaker added that “many options … are on the table and we’ll be revealing what our plan is in short order.”

“We don’t know what [Johnson’s] plan will be to keep government operational come next Friday, and he’s under a lot of pressure to maintain his position as speaker with the conservatives in the House,” said G. William Hoagland, senior vice president for the Bipartisan Policy Center, a Washington-based think tank. “We are in a very difficult situation for keeping the government funded.”

Senate eyes huge ‘maxi-bus’ to address year-end spending crunch

Combining the remaining nine appropriations bills into a massive package and bringing it to the floor would give them a chance to make up for lost time.

“Instead of a minibus, it’s a maxi-bus. I’m in favor of it. I think it’s the right thing to do,” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-S.D.) said.

When omnibus spending packages have moved in the Senate in past years, they have done so after Senate and House appropriators had a chance to at least exchange conference notes, according to one Senate appropriations veteran.

[But the House has no notes to share.]

If lawmakers don’t get their work done, they face the prospect of a government shutdown or the passage of an extended stopgap measure that keeps government funding frozen — or possibly cuts current levels — until next year.

GOP divisions force Mike Johnson to punt on spending bills

House Republicans on Thursday pulled their third government funding vote in two weeks due to threats from moderates and conservatives to kill the legislation.
The House had been scheduled to vote on the Financial Services and General Government appropriations bill on Tuesday morning, but the vote was abruptly cancelled.

Republican leadership also pulled votes last week and this week on a bill funding the Departments of Transportation and Housing and Urban Development.

One week left.

So glad that everyone in the House GOP is laser focused on offering sensible reality-based solutions to the budget situation, given the time crunch.

House shoots down move to reduce WH press secretary’s salary to $1

The amendment, introduced by Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-N.Y.), was defeated 257-165-1, with 54 Republicans joining all Democrats in going against the move.

In campaigning for the amendment, Tenney called Jean-Pierre a “liar” and “anti-Semitic” [and accused her of] "acting in a condescending manner"

....as the government, unless the GOP House gets its act together, will shut down on Black Friday.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Maybe that will reduce KJP's salary to $1. Let's hope.
