The new covenant is "new", as attested to by God (according to the writer of Hebrews).
In that He says, “A new covenant,” He has made the first obsolete. (Heb 8:13)
God used the word, "new" purpose when He told Jeremiah of the new covenant which was to come because He was indicating that the first covenant was going to be made obsolete. That's why one is called "old" and the other is called "new". The fact that the new covenant is better than the old covenant does not detract from the fact that it is new.
“But now hath He [Christ] obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also He is the Mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. For finding fault with them, He saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in My covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
The "old" covenant = keep my law and statues (people unable to do it_
The "new" covenant - keep my law and statues (through Jesus He will help people to do it)
The difference between these two covenants lies in the character of the
promises. In the old covenant some of these were made by God and some by the people (of which they did not keep). In the new covenant they are all made by the Lord.
“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord;
I will put My laws (not new laws) into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to Me a people; and they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know Me, from the least to the greatest. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. In that He saith, A new covenant, He hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.” Hebrews 8:6-13.
It's the same promises made by God ... through the faith of Jesus He helps us to repent and turn away from sin (transgression of the law) ... we will indeed mess up here and there ... but the Lord will finish His work ... because He is faithful.
Throughout the entire Bible it is about the promises God makes and us believing those promises will be fulfilled by Him ... that is faith.
Grace is
God choosing to save and bless us rather than destroy us as our sin deserves. Ephesians 2:8 says, “For by grace are you saved, through faith, and that not of yourselves.” The only way any of us can enter into a relationship with God is because of His grace toward us.
God never changes. His principles never change ... He is not a shifting shadow.
From Adam and Eve, until now and until He returns .... our relationship with God has and is based on faith (promises of God) ... that is .... we believe God WILL do all that He said He will do and this is nothing new.
The codified old covenant was based on the promises of men and women who hoped to gain salvation by their own effort of obedience (unobtainable). The codified new covenant, or everlasting covenant, on the other hand, is a one-sided promise by God to write His Law in the hearts of His people (See Heb 8:10-12; Jer 31:31-34).3 The people need only to accept God’s promise by faith in order for the covenant to become active in their lives. It is a promise of righteousness in Jesus which translates into everlasting life.
Adam & Eve ... and those thereafter saved by faith (believing the promises of God) through grace ... nothing new.
The earthly sanctuary system was put in place as an example for us of how salvation would take place ... through Messiah to come and Him being the final sacrifice for all for all time .... the earthly sacrificial system and ordinances were done away with no longer needed ... not Gods laws. If Gods law (the 10) were done away with then there is no sin (meaning everyone would be saved) .... we know that certainly is not the case.
The lamb was slain before the creation of the world who would take aways the sins of the world .... this is the "new" (better) covenant in place before creation .... t
he ever lasting covenant. Everything for the redemption of mankind was put in place before creation. The bible accounts show us how everything has and is unfolding (providing us better understanding) to the end when our Lord returns.
The everlasting covenant is unchangeable since creation ... so there is nothing new ... all covenants in the bible is the renewing of the everlasting covenant of which is in Christ alone.
