You can tell a lot about a person by the books they read is a paraphrase of a quote from Joseph Patrick Pascale. (He said "the books they carry"). So, I want to look at the books our leaders are or have been known to read or promote. Let's start at the top, with President Donald Trump. First, I don't have any knowledge whether he actually read the book itself or not but his early church upbringing was with his father at the Collegiate Marble Church in NYC. For those unfamiliar with the Collegiate Marble Church, it is one of the oldest continuous Protestant congregations in the country, having been established in 1628. It is affiliated with two distinct "Reformed" denominations, the United Church of Christ and the Reformed Church in America. At the time Mr. Trump was attending there it was led by Norman Vincent Peale, author of the book, "The Power of Positive Thinking".

The book teaches techniques of affirmation and visualizations i.e. positive thinking to make one successful. These techniques include repeating "If God be for us, who can be against us" and “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” ten times every day. It also says one must believe that "you receive power from God" to accomplish anything, even if that endeavor is a secular in nature. He also admonishes readers to "always believe in success and not to believe in defeat because most obstacles are mental in character”. He teaches to never admit you are wrong as that is negative thinking. He touts a version of "Fake it til you make it" philosophy. He teaches that we must always claim that everything we do is successful, even if there is evidence to the contrary. He says that if we repeat that we are the best or the greatest often enough, even when we are not, it will come to pass. He teaches never to admit defeat. In 1955, Psychiatrist R. C. Murphy compared Dr. Peale's message to hypnosis techniques. Murphy explains that such repeated hypnosis defeats an individual's sense of reality and ability to think critically. He called Dr. Peale's theories a dangerous form of self-hypnosis, which since it is based on repeating things that aren't true at the time, can do more harm than good. R. C. Murphy writes that Peale's teachings “endorse the cruelties which men commit against each other” which encourages readers to “give up their moral strivings and feel free to hate as much as they like”. Psychologist Martin Seligman, also condemned Peale's methods in his book, "Authentic Happiness". There he wrote; " Dr. Peale's positive thinking often involves trying to make people believe upbeat statements in the absence of evidence, or even in the face of contrary evidence." Any of this sound familiar?

Next let's turn to the book that Ivana Trump told her lawyer, Michael Kennedy that Trump "kept in a cabinet by his bed and read at night." That is a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order. The subject came up again when Trump began repeating certain Nazi or fascist rhetoric during his campaign. One of these Hitler speeches spoke of Jews "polluting the blood" of Germans, a reference Trump made of immigrants to the US. Trump's deputy chief of staff for policy and homeland security, Steven Miller said, "America is for Americans only". (I don't think he was referring to "First Nations Americans, either). This is a variation of a quote from a 1939 Nazi rally at Madison Square Garden, where the speaker promised that the Nazis would "restore America to the true Americans." Both Hitler and Mussolini said in many speeches that Nazi's were going to "make Germany and Italy great again". They also coined the term "drain the swamp" and it was used in many of Hitler's speeches. Hitler spoke of eliminating the "vermin" Jews. Trump said he would eliminate "the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country,". When the media made note of these comparisons Trump's campaign spokesman, Steven Cheung, said of those making the comparisons, "their entire existence will be crushed when President Trump returns to the White House.” When called out by the media for his remarks, Cheung doubled down and said, "I should have said their sad miserable existence". It seems that Mr. Trump has embodied much of the things found in these two books. I don't want to speculate how much of this is a conscience decision on his part or not. I can only say that he continually uses phrases and techniques of both Fascists and Dr. Peale, both books he has been exposed to.

Now let's take a brief look at the Vice President, J.D. Vance. He has endorsed a book called "Unhumans: The Secret History of Communist Revolutions (and How to Crush Them). It is by Jack Posobiec, a well known right wing media personality along with ghost writer, Joshua Lisec. It says in part “For as long as there have been beauty and truth, love and life, there have also been the ugly liars who hate and kill. these “people of anti-civilization” have always gone by different names: communists, socialists, leftists, and progressives. They should be called unhumans. With power, unhumans undo civilization itself. They undo order. They undo the basic bonds of society that make communities and nations possible. They destroy the human rights of life, liberty, and property—and undo their own humanity in the process by fully embracing nihilism, cynicism, and envy. They rob and kill. They don’t believe what they say. They don’t care about winning debates. They don’t even want equality. They just want an excuse to destroy everything. They want an excuse to destroy you. On a base level, unhumans seek the death of the successful and the desecration of the beautiful. They simply hate those who are good-looking and successful.” He also says "“Our study of history has brought us to this conclusion: Democracy has never worked to protect innocents from the unhumans. It is time to stop playing by rules! They won’t!” So, is this the kind of rhetoric or attitude about those who happen to disagree with your political opinions that we want from our leaders? That question is still up for debate!

As for me, I'm listening to Dr. Fauci's autobiography on Libby. The wait list was months long. Such a blessing to mankind.
For Vance, I would recommend any of Pope Francis' books. I read his meditations last Lent and of course his environmental encyclical, Laudato Si.
I think God brought Vance to meet the Pope on Easter because He saw that, with an 180 degree turn, he could do great things for the world.
Trump? Sr. Joan Chittister's "Twelve Steps to Inner Freedom: Humility Revisited."

I'm shocked! Who could possibly believe such a thing?! ;) (Plus trying to pronounce " strengtheneth" 10 times a day must be exhausting.)

It's all been widely reported. I think Vanity Fair did the original story on Ivana Trump and the Hitler speeches book around 1990 and then it was covered pretty widely when Trump began using some of the rhetoric from Hitler speeches during the 2020 campaign. As for Vance and the "Unhumans" book, you can read all about it in the New York Times, USA Today, Yahoo News and WLWT, his local news station in Cincinnati among other places. It was a public endorsement. Check it out. It's all out there.

Enough people believed or at least read it to make it a best seller with over 5 million copies in print according to Amazon. You must remember this was the 1950s.

Was Vanity Fair a legitimate news source in 1990? Also, just because Ivana Trump may have told that to her lawyer doesn't mean she was speaking facts.

I don't know about a news source but they did do a lot of high profile interviews. The more "legitimate news sources" didn't pick up on and research the story until Trump was using the same language as Hitler in his speeches. I think given that Trump is obviously very familiar with Hitler's rhetoric, it lends more credence to the story. I didn't say that because she told her lawyer it meant she was speaking facts, but on the other hand, I have no reason to doubt her. Again, it's the totality of the facts that make it sound credible.

Absolutely, I do disagree with any assertion that President Trump uses the same kind of language as did Adolf Hitler. Perhaps it would be good to remember that the liberals in the mass media, as well as the leadership of the Democratic Party, attempted to describe Donald Trump as another Hitler. The majority of the voters did not believe those attacks in 2023 & 2024, and those attacks against Trump are still failing to resonate with the majority of Americans.

Have you read what Bill Maher said @Vambram? I think he’s spot on with this one.

Bill Maher was not a fan of Larry David’s recent satirical “My Dinner With Adolf” essay in the New York Times. In a new interview with Piers Morgan, Maher slammed the comedian’s essay, which he said compared his recent meeting with Trump to a meeting with Hitler, calling the scorching take “insulting to six million dead Jews.”

“To use the Hitler thing — first of all, it’s kind of insulting to six million dead Jews,” Maher told Morgan on his podcast. “It’s an argument you kind of lost just to start it. Look, maybe it’s not completely logically fair, but Hitler has really kind of got to stay in his own place.”

It's all been widely reported.

"Widely reported" only means it's being repeated. That is almost trivial to pull off. All you have to do is whisper a juicy story to a reporter with wire service access and away we go. Wire service subscribers pick up that story, and presto! It's widely reported. Sort of like staring a rumor by saying "It's rumored." Manipulation is easy when it's what someone wants to hear.

What's needed is a hard cite, one that can be examined to see if it's valid.

FWIW, have read The Communist Manifesto on the recommendation of a retired government employee who said he'd checked it out so many times that the librarian probably thought he was a communist. Somewhere behind me is an "out there" woo-woo book that I made the mistake of buying instead of seeing if the library had it. Have read a book of rank heresy (that's probably forgotten by now) not once, not twice, but three times. Sometimes its good to know what those who despise you are thinking.

Other than that, have been reading Ashley's Book of Knots. Am thinking about looking something up in Popular Mechanics Home Handyman. Almost reread part of Josephus on a topic. Oh, and have been reading some owners manuals. Make of that what you will.

I understand that folks on the right think that Trump is a patriotic American. Just as folks in Germany thought Hitler was a patriotic German. You disagree that Trump uses the same kind of language as Hitler. Then please tell me where quips like immigrants "poisoning the blood" of America comes from. It's a direct quote from Hitler, only Hitler said it about Jews. And what about calling out "the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country,", just as Hitler called out the "Vermin Jews" who were infesting Germany? And what about the phrase "Make America Great Again"? Hitler used the phrase "Make Germany great again", a phrase he borrowed from Mussolini. And please tell me then. where did the phrase "drain the swamp" originate, if not with Hitler? I know that a majority of voters either did not believe that these were Hitler quotes, or didn't care, but that could be ignorance of history. Please tell me where these quotes came from if not Hitler and the fascists. And BTW, I don't believe that Trump is another Hitler, I simply pointed out that he uses a lot of Hitler's rhetoric and the possibility that that came from reading Hitler's speeches.

I used the term widely reported to answer a question of where to find confirmation of the facts in my post. Let me rephrase for those who want to play semantics. It has been thoroughly researched and reported by many reputable news outlets. What sort of "hard cite" do you need? And on which details? Can you not do your own research and report on it? If you have any "hard cite" that can disprove the facts that I have laid out, please provide them. If not, then your attempts to discredit the reporting that I cited are nothing more than your own opinion and I don't know your qualifications so I can't just take your word. So, please examine any of these and let me know if you find evidence that they are not "valid".

I own quite a few books that I've never gotten around to reading, because I bought them before coming back to Christianity. It's not important to me anymore to read fictional tales. History is what interests me the most now (the younger me hated history).

Tuur: I also have an Ashley's Book of Knots in my library which I break out every once in a great while to learn a knot. I was into bushcrafting and survival for many years.

The Bible covers most everything I need for reading material, but I supplement it with the rich heritage of my church denomination's pioneer writings, which include 676 books, periodicals and writings going back to the 1800's, and weekly Bible lessons that have been ongoing since the 1850's.

One thing that I love to do is collect data and arrange it in a meaningful way, and so taking notes while studying the Bible, and organizing it, is enjoyable to me.
