I haven't eaten an alligator. No access to one. I see cows and alligators the same. Meat. But I could also get milk from a cow. So, alligator goes first.

I am watching those men catching them and bbqing them. Yuck! They just don't look inticing. I wonder what the meat is like. Fatty, etc.? Looks like they kill on the average of 15 a day and there are several boats and hunters. I wonder how many there are in there?

Alligator is popular in Louisiana cuisine. That's where I had it, first as a teenager when I used to go to visit family I had at the time in that area of the country.

I like it, but like any meat, I wouldn't it eat every day. I know it's a stereotype that everything weird tastes like chicken, but that's actually not far off. It tastes a bit leaner/less greasy, though. (I've only ever had it fried, so I'm comparing it with fried chicken.)

Try it! I feel like it's a good 'entry food' to get into weird food stuff.

I used to be able to buy crocodile meat from the supermarket but I haven't seen it on the shelf for a couple of years. Kangaroo is still available as steak, mince or sausages. Emu used to be available but it's now hard to find.

Croc is hard to describe. There's no fat and the taste is sort of chicken combined with a fishy taste. I've had it in curries so this would have changed the taste. Texture is chicken like but a little heavier. I'm told that, like beef, the taste/texture varies depending on which part of the animal the meat comes from.

Note that we (in Australia) have crocodiles (not alligators) and the bigger ones live in salt water which would alter the taste. I think your alligators all live in freshwater.

Expensive! Yes, alligator is in non salty water. I can't say fresh water as swamp isn't fresh. is that the difference between the two? The water they live in?

We must the the only counry that eats the animals on the country's coat of arms. Bit like an American eating a bald eagle.

I'm guessing you've never been in a swamp. They aren't the disgusting smelly places you imagine.

In passing, I read A Town Like Alice years ago. And the heroine starts up a business in the fictional town of Willstown. Making...wait for it...shoes from aligator skins supplied by a local hunter. Whut?

I mean, Neville Shute was living in Australia when the book was published. You'd think he would have known. Maybe Google has just got us used to having a world full of knowledge at our fingertips. Literally.

It's not the water. There are saltwater and freshwater crocs. We have both. Saltwater crocs are bigger and live in estuaries and tidal zones. I've seen salties swimming offshore in the ocean.

Freshwater crocs are smaller and usually inhabit rivers above tidal (saltwater) levels. I've swum in billabongs inhabited by freshwater crocs. Salties are far more aggressive and bigger and usually stick to ocean estuaries and tidal zones.

Physiologically crocs and alligators seem to be differentiated based on mouth shape and teeth.

Yes. Alligator tail taste pretty much like chicken. It's common in Cajun cuisine. The only way I've had it is breaded and fried...like chicken. :) It's very good.

If you're ever in Beaumont, TX, try Floyds Seafood restaurant. They have alligator tail and a lot of great Cajun food. I ate there a couple weeks back, but I had crawfish. :)
