  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Not sure about veggies, but there are some herbs that are good year round. Thyme is one, and there are many varieties available, including mat-forming creeping types that can be used between stepping stones or in a rock garden. Rosemary is another wonderful herb, and is found in an upright form, and a low growing variety: Rosemarinus prostratus. Lavender is lovely in the winter, with the soft, silvery-gray leaves, and also has many varieties, including dwarf forms. Corsican mint is nice, if you have a shady spot for it. All of these herbs can be used in cooking.

Here in Southern California, winter is the only time you can grow most leafy vegetables. Experiment with mesclun mixes. I highly recommend looking for one that contains arugula and red mustard. Our traditional Superbowl meal is a huge barbecued tri-tip sandwich (on a whole loaf of french bread) with homemade mayo, dijon mustard, tomatoes, red mustard and arugula. Now's the time to plant to have them in good supply by then.

Also root vegetables like carrots and beets.

Also peas - especially snow peas and sugar snaps.

You might also want to try plants in the cabbage family like broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, kohlrabi, etc., but I don't find these as economical to grow as to buy.
