Why Are Young Women Insisting on the Return of the Chapel Veil?

Amid a growing trend in immodest dress and restrictions on traditional Catholic liturgy, a resurgence in the popularity of chapel veils and mantillas for women has been highlighted by secular media and described as a return to the “Biblical.”

A recent study published by The Free Press reported on observations made regarding the use of mantillas by women in churches. Titled “The Young Catholic Women Bringing Back Veils,” the report ‘did exactly what it says on the tin,’ namely, it shone a light on the growing trend amongst women of varying ages to use a veil when inside a church.

But what exactly is the deeper meaning of using a veil in the first place?

Faith or Fashion?

Attendees of the traditional Latin Mass are more likely accustomed to the sight of uncovered heads for gentlemen in church, while ladies often don lace chapel veils or mantillas. As traditional Masses have rapidly grown in number from 2007 through 2021, so has the prevalence of the traditional custom of ladies’ head coverings.

However, this same practice has now spread outside the Latin Mass, as ladies adopt the veil to aid their devotions.

According to The Free Press’ Madeleine Kearns, “the veil boom is organic—occurring neither at the direction of, nor in defiance to, church authorities.”

Based on her conversations with several women, Kearns notes that the return of the mantillas is linked to a realization of what the liturgy is centered on, or rather, Who.

“People dress beautifully to go see the King or Queen, so it should be with the Lord,” one woman told Kearns.

Society and modern culture promote a variety of manners in which order, beauty and the traditional sense of decency are rejected—especially with regard to male and female dress. For men, wearing suits and properly ornate clothing is seen as archaic, and modest female attire is relentlessly attacked by progressives as restrictive or prudish. In spite of this, and perhaps even because of this, a return to veiling is now underway.

Veils in Early Catholic Tradition

I think it's more common in conservative dioceses. In some small towns, it might raise a few eyebrows, and people will talk.

I wore a veil years ago, when in a progressive Catholic Church. (And they probably thought I was a fanatic! LOL)

Occasionally, a family with women wearing veils (and dresses!) will attend Mass at the local progressive Catholic Church here. I think its pretty cool, but I suspect they are viewed by many as fanatics, too!

I think it helps alot, if 'like minded' persons 'find' each other ...

Good for you!

Weird how piety is considered fanatical.

I have seen snickering and eyeball rolling from the men of all people when veiling, and right in front of the Tabernacle before mass starts.

This outward behavior reveals their interior disposition: They do not believe in the real presence.

If they genuinely did, they would not verbally or with their body language, strike down a worshiper of Christ, right in front of Christ.

When Blessed Mother was following her son along the way of the cross, I have often wondered if she was jeered and spit upon as well.

I'm there for a King, and it shows.

My heart and my love of Him are all that really matters.

Laughing at and pointing fingers do not belong at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

Interestingly, these same folk are so kind and welcoming to a visiting religious sister.

Gee, her habit is respected, but not my veil?

It was so fine a day when a visiting group of religious invited me to sit in their pew, and the astonishment on the face of laity around me was palpable.

We knelt down together on the kneelers, took Holy communion together at the rail.

It's just about Joy and love of Him, that spills out in the form of reverence.

I had been invited to the local EO church by a guy who comes to my home chapel to pray sometimes. Not being booked to serve a church, I finally went over there. Being somewhat familiar with Orthodox culture, I asked my daughters (7 & 9) if they would like to cover. They readily agreed and were enjoying it. The older one chose a bonnet much like the local Mennonites wear and the younger chose a more sheen sort of veil. To my surprise, my daughters and the one and only Eastern European immigrant in that church were the only people veiled!

A friend of mine who was dying asked me to wear a head covering to Mass for him and I did. I quit after he died, but I wouldn't mind wearing one again.

It's my understanding many Greeks don't veil, either.

In the FSSP Chapel (Latin Mass) where I live, nearly all the women, including little girls and baby girls, wear the veil. Men usually dress up in suits.

At the Mass I attend there’s only one woman who veils. I don’t know about the other Masses.
I assume you attend the modern Mass and not the Latin Mass? I'm not too surprised to hear that.

If you go to a Latin Mass, 99.9% of the women and girls will veil. I guarantee it.

Blessings

Yeah, up until I discovered Christian message boards I didn’t even know there were other kinds of Masses other than the type I attend. I think it’s called Novus Ordo.

Yup.

If you want to attend an Eastern rite Catholic Divine Liturgy, it's the same liturgy the Orthodox use, but they are called Eastern Catholics.

The Liturgy is VERY beautiful.

You stand for most of the liturgy, and receive Holy Communion on a golden spoon.

I have searched my brain and I have brought this to attention of my dad who is 80 has he ever seen a woman of the Christian faith and Catholics are who has covered themselves with a veil outside of marriage. We both couldn't come up with any. I attended Catholic schools to 19 so I am very familiar with nuns covering their head and body. I have though never seen it extend to the face. I believe people need to do what feels right to them, I have just not seen it.

I think what you've said is a very big part of it ...

Sadly, many religious sisters no longer wear the habit, not even a veil.

Jesus says that it's not what we put into our mouths that makes us impure, rather, what comes out of our mouths makes us impure.
Something similar applies to veils and coverings: nothing that you put on your head will make you purer or more acceptable to God. What you put on your head won't improve your disposition or help you to open your heart more to receive Christ.

Those that wear them do it out of respect for the Lord and says it does enhance their worship.

I’ve never seen it extend to the face either. The woman in my parish just covers her head.
