I'd like to get a feel for what people think. Actually, I'd love to post this on some other forums here at CF, but I'll start here.

Right now, I don't beleive in hell. On the days I do, however, I manage his damnation rate is 100%. If he is a God who damns souls, I doubt he will really save any. Even from the typical understanding that evangelicalism promotes, less than 10% of souls go to heaven.

No fun.

Thanks for the stats moneymanager! I knew you guys would give me some real answers. That link was really eye-opening.

Looks like it'll be crowded in hell- hope there's enough room for my family (Methodist and Universalist liberal un-Christians) and our dogs. We'll set up our brimstone shanty next to John Lennon's and Jim Croce's. Hell has GOT to have the best music in town! Yeehaw!

Well, I don't believe in hell. But I do think all evil is eventually exterminated and that a form of universalism arises in light of the annhilation of anything and everything evil. So... I guess you could call me an annhilationist. Percentage wise... not sure what to say... My faith in mankind's goodness is slim but my faith in God's mercy is large

I think if there is anything left to save in a person, they are saved

I believe that there is going to be somewhere bewtween 75 and 85 percent in hell. Because in the Bible it says that the gate that leds to destruction is wide and the gate that leads to life is narrow and that many people go through the wide gate and few find the narrow gate. Matthew 7:13-14

I think hell is going to have a small number....read the book of revalation christ is coming back for a race that no man could number....

Consider this thought all the people that are dead in christ, you cannot just think about us who are living today, also the folks of old were more religious and reverence God more than us busy bodies today

According to the bible...

Matthew 7:13-14
"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it."

There are 2 reason for belief in hell outside of what the bible says. (which is this)

Rev 20:10
And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

20:15 If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

First, use reason:

Do you believe God (if real) is good?

If God is good is He going to punish murder's and rapist?

How about theives and liars?

1 Corinthians 6:9-10

Or know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with men,
nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.


If God is good, then he must punish evil because it's in the nature of good to do justice. Hell is God's prision.


2nd reason: Conscience.


Why does eveyone know lies, theft rape, and murder is wrong?
Con means "with" and science means "knowledge." When we sin we do it with knowledge its wrong. While we believe we might escape justice for a time, death is proof of what the bible says, the soul that sin will die.


So the question becomes, how well will you do on judgement day? Here's a quick test to find out.

Have you lied?

Have you stolen anything in your life?

Have you used God's name as a curse word?

Are you a lying, blasphmous, thief only looking at 3 of the commandments?

Would you be innocent or guilty?

Would you go to heaven or hell?

Well, since the word Hell is translated to English from four different words, Sheol (Hebrew), Hades (Greek), Gehenna (Greek) and Tartarus (Greek) of which none mean a physical place of eternal torture. I believe 0% are going to Hell.

Did you know in England they used to put their potatoes in hell? Hell was a cool, dark, covered place?

I believe that we are all sinners and all will be punished, either now or after judgment but this punishment is of a corrective nature - a purification so that God may be All in All.

JW's often hold that view, but this scripture verse is in complete contrast.

Day and night for ever and ever torment translated from Hebrew means the same in English. The real issue has to do with how much you believe what the bible says, and if it's true.

There are three words translated "hell" in Scripture:
Gehenna (Greek): The place of punishment (Matthew 5:22,29; 10:28; and James 3:6)
Hades (Greek): The abode of the dead (Matthew 11:23; 16:18, Luke 16:23; Acts 2:27)
Sheol (Hebrew): The grave (Psalm 9:17; 16:10)

There are those who accept that hell is a place of punishment, but believe that the punishment is to be annihilated—to cease conscious existence. They can’t conceive that the punishment of the wicked will be conscious and eternal. If they are correct, then a man like Adolph Hitler, who was responsible for the deaths of millions, is being "punished" merely with eternal sleep. His fate is simply to return to the non-existent state he was in before he was born, where he doesn’t even know that he is being punished.

However, Scripture paints a different story. The rich man who found himself in hell (Luke 16:19–31) was conscious. He was able to feel pain, to thirst, and to experience remorse. He wasn’t asleep in the grave; he was in a place of "torment." If hell is a place of knowing nothing or a reference to the grave into which we go at death, Jesus' statements about hell make no sense. He said that if your hand, foot, or eye causes you to sin, it would be better to remove it than to "go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched" (Mark 9:43–48).

The Bible refers to the fate of the unsaved with such fearful words as the following:


  • "Shame and everlasting contempt" (Daniel 12:2)
  • "Everlasting punishment" (Mathew 25:46)
  • "Weeping and gnashing of teeth" (Matthew 24:51)
  • "Fire unquenchable" (Luke 3:17)
  • "Indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish" (Romans 2:8,9)
  • "Everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord" (2 Thessalonians 1:9)
  • "Eternal fire...the blackness of darkness for ever" (Jude 7,13)
Revelation 14:10,11 tells us the final, eternal destiny of the sinner: "He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone...the smoke of their torment ascended up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day or night."

I wonder how people who see hell as being crowded deal with it. God, I couldn't even bear to get up in the morning if I thought that four out of five people sitting by the fountain at the organic market were going to wind up suffering forever. Or if I thought that they deserved it.

We do what the bible says....pull as many as you can from the fire. Those that believe the bible is true, share the message of Jesus Christ daily. This is not based on what we "want" to happen to people, but on what scripture says will happen. If the bible is wrong, then there's nothing to worry about...


Then again, it's prove to be right thus far.

What about Jesus's sacrifice? There is just some mentality of some people I know that everybody who sins, be it a thief or what not - is going to hell and ignore the fact the only way to God is through Jesus. If some of these scriptures are going to be taken literally as a pathway to hell then it sounds like everybody's going.

The OP part, I'm a sucker so I would wish everyone that is human goes to heaven and leave hell for Satan and his fallen angels. ;-)

Hazardous a guess, I'd say 75% or so. There are some really nasty people on the planet and there are bound to be some who enjoy being that way so much they turn their backs on Him even if they're presented with a "last chance" by the Almighty "in person"
