Before you devoted your WHOLE life to GOD and sought HIS WILL in every decision you were a slave to whatever felt good or anything you wanted to do.

Once you take GOD into your life you attempt to do everything GOD would want or expect you to do. GOD is
righteous and therefore we becomes slaves to righteousness.

Hi, remember Paul says he is using the example of slaves as a worldly example to relate to."Romans 619", He is speaking of how addicted and chainned to the things of sin that we loved in the past. He uses slaves of righteousness as a contrast to slaves to sin.

Remember that the whole chapter is about how sin had its grip on us. I will give you a perfect example. There was a girl who was a party animal at all the clubs, when her friends were speaking of her past life, they mentioned what a party animal she uses to be. She answered her friends "Now i am a party animal for God..amen"
She is not literally a party animal for God but wants to show what she had all the passion about before she now has for God. This is a worldly example of her change.

Paul says he used a worldly example not a heavenly example so do not get to caught up on the word "slave", Paul is showing how chainned we were to our past sin. SpiritHappy

In contrast to Romans 6:17 in which he wrote "you were slaves of sin". So when we become born again through Christ, we are no longer "slaves to sin" we will no longer do the sinful things that kept us in bondage. Being a "slave to righteousness" instead we live for Christ and strive to present ourselves for holiness instead of uncleanness.

In other words when we were slaves to sin, we did things that were unclean and lewd, once we become slaves to righteousness we do things for holiness. See Romans 6:19-23 This will help explain further.

ok then, can some one define "righteousness" ?? i get the whole slave to sin idea compared to the slave to righteousness... and turning away from sin and turning your life to God. so then, what does Paul mean by righteousness? it's just a very broad term..

The person that follows his flesh works to serve sin and his flesh, not God's law and not righteousness in one's life, and when one follows the leading of the Spirit of God, a person obeys God's commandments because he has repented and has accepted Jesus Christ's sacrifice, and so becomes righteous before Him.

Righteousness is simply, seeking and living in God's will.

Not God's will like God's destiny for us, but his want or the direction He'd have us live in our life. This direction can be found in his law and in the freedoms Paul writes about..

Being bound to his "will" is like being bound, or the type of servant hood we are to find in a Godly marriage.. How a husband is bound to his wife, or how a wife serves her husband. We are not slaves in an unwilling union, but are bound to each other out of love.. because of this love we find ourselves living for the others interest, and not our own.

This is the type of slave to righteousness we are to aspire to.

Romans 6:18 says-

we are "slaves to righteousness" ... what exactly does that mean in the role of our faith??

We are either slaves to righteousness or slaves to sin. Some take this to mean there is no "free will", though I think this is confusing: there is freedom in being a "slave" to righteousness.

This is like saying one becomes "more then a conqueror" by becoming a slave... or like saying a servant of some petty business owner is on par with being a servant of the Most High, the Lord Almighty.

As Jesus said, 'the truth will set you free', and that is true.

Being a slave to goodness is the true choice all people would make... if they could see what goodness was and had the capability to do it. But, this is only possible through the Spirit of Christ, which all Christians have.

Paul, in context there is reminding us not to serve "two masters", but to become... to work towards... the goal of being a servant of the Most High, of Jesus Christ.

We might like to think of ourselves as masters ourselves, but remember, a hammer in the hand of a fool... is quite different then a hammer in the hand of God.

There is great glory and all freedom in such "slavery".

Dear SumMer87. Our God is a God of Righteousness, He gave us 10 Commandments. Jesus gave us 2, which contain all 10 which God gave us. 1) Love God with all our hearts, with all our souls, and with all our minds. 2) Love each other as we love ourselves. God is also Love, and to be a slave to righteousness, also means a slave to love. By following God`s Commandments, we become slaves to righteousness and to love. To be a slave means to do what our Master says, and Paul is telling us to be slaves to what God wants from us. I say this with love and humility, SumMer. Greetings from Emmy, your sister in Christ.
