Our church is a 'Come as you are' non-denominational church. We have a mix of attire worn. I would say a good majority are very comfortable in jeans. I personally LIVE in jeans so I am glad I don't have to change to just go to church. We have all kinds, including biker types, and dressed to the hilt suits. Does not matter what you are wearing. All that matters is that you are there to worship and praise our Lord! We play contemporaty christian music and have sermons that relate to real life situations. We hare growing rapidly and are finding many of these people are leaving the organized religions. We also have a good number of unchurched people who say they were never comfortable at traditional organized religious churches but love it here!

Sounds like an awesome church :) I've been going to my most recent one a little more lately...love the rock music (my way of praising God) and just the over-all comfortable feeling..like yours. :)

tube top and spandex mini skirt

Southern gospel.

Okay, now for the truth:

Jeans and a sweater
Mostly traditional hymns at the sunday morning service, contemporary at the saturday night service, but I wear the same thing to both services. That's how part of how we picked our church, we felt comfortable coming as we are and no own looked down on us for our clothing.

I wear Jeans and a shirt we sing traditional. We did do the contemperary last month. Our church is very casual but some people do dress up. When I went to Christian school we had to wear dresses on thursday that was the day we had chapel.

I dont htink it matters what you wear. As long as you are there to worship who cares what you wear?

I am doing a study on the correlation (if any) between clothing styles and music styles.

What type of clothing do you wear to church (suit/tie, dress, jeans, shorts, etc.)?

And what type of music is played in your church (traditional hymns, contemporary music, mixture, piano/organ, drums/guitars, etc.)?

I am not looking for a debate. I am just wanting to see if there is a any correlation between the two or if they tend to be unrelated.

Thanks in advance for your responses.
Really great to see you again!

My background is raised "dressing" for church. Or "Dressing our best for God." As a means to show thanks not to outdo others. Amongst many other “qualities” to this mode of thought. Growing up I had specific "dresses" (only) for church and they remained so. It was conservative upbringing. I still dress for church (within my means i.e. I wear office clothes to church rather than have just "church" dresses) but now I also wear pants too-- I have never worn jeans, but would only if the activity called for it, or it simply was my best at the time. Overall I believe it makes no difference to God in this regard - but personally I do this.

Regarding music. We have choir, group lead singers (5 or 6 onstage to help lead) vocalists, and a Orchestra -The full blown deal. I love the classics (especially old Southern Gospel hymns) However, I am getting used to the new contemporary stuff. I can say that after a couple I start to get fidgety - sometimes they can sing up to five or six different songs at the start of the service, I like to hang out in the bookstore until they get part of the way through it. My husband loves to sing all of them :D - so as John McArthur says "It's a battle from the beginning!" when we arrive at church ;) This bugs me that I do this sometimes, it freaks me out a bit all the hoopla! I am still getting used to such a big church. But seriously I don't even know the songs - this could be it? But neither does he sometimes – he follows the bouncing ball over the words. And pretty good at it too!

He dresses for church but is more casual in dress. He would wear nice jeans if in the mood. Neat and clean is dressing to him. He tends to be a bit more charismatic than I am (his roots) so maybe your right there is a correlation in this?

Our Church is a mix...The older folks wear their Sunday best...My husband, son and myself we were more casual clothes..I wear dress pants or knit pants(i call em my dressed up sweat pants) and a nice blouse or sweater...My hubby always wears Jeans and a nice shirt...my son the same...He owns one suit and I can only get him to wear it for weddings and funerals, lol...We work with the youth and there is no telling what we will be doing from week to week...so I dress casual...I do occasionally wear a dress..but last year we were putting our Samaritans purse boxes together and I was wearing a dress and heels...When the Pastor stopped by the class room to say Goodmorning He found me sitting on the floor, heels kicked off and I was packing boxes in my stocking feet..lol...
We had a former pastor who's wife was the music director and she wore slacks every sunday...She played a keyboard for most of the service...The pastor was questioned as to why she wore slacks...and he told the member who questioned it...well she is sitting in front of the church, playing a keyboard..do you really think a dress would be a good idea???
Also many times I have invited friends to church and I get the answer, oh I have nothing to wear...well I tell them..we are very casual..come as you are...I dont think God cares what we wear either...He see's our heart

Our church is pretty much a blend of 'fashion'. Some come in jeans and nicer shirts and some wear dresses-women/men-blazers, ties and slacks. As far as our music it is kind of ecclectic (sp?) as well, we will sing old style hymns as well as contemporary worship all in one service. I like that we embrace all these diversities, and everyone is comfortable there. I don't see anyone looking down and anyone else just because of attire.

We all wear our best, whatever that happens to be for each individual or family, so anything from jeans to suit and tie. As for music, we sing the old hymns with piano or guitar, absolutely no "canned" music or amplified instruments. Absolutely no rock, contemporary, praise and worship or similar.

So far it looks like there is a bit of a connection, eh?

Well, it really depends on what I want to wear to church. I spend an equal amount of time wearing either jeans or a skirt or nice pants. I don't really wear dresses that much anymore. And I usually wear a nice top with the skirt or jeans.
But there are also those people at my church who wear their "Sunday best" and then there are other people who wear jeans and some random shirt. So we have our mix.
That's for the early/contemporary service where contemporary praise and worship songs are played.
In the 11 AM/traditional service we have hymns and most people don't wear jeans. They wear their "Sunday best" or nice pants or a skirt and a nice top to go with that. And suits for the men.

We have "contemporary music" I guess you'd call it- worship songs on the powerpoint.

People wear a mix of different things. Some of the men wear suits every Sunday, some of the women wear "church dresses" (you know, those matching skirt-and-top outfits...). Our pastor usually wears dress pants and a sweater or shirt or collar-shirt of some sort. Other people wear a variety of non-dressy clothing, including jeans, track pants etc.

I personally like to dress up for church- I see it as a special occasion sorta. At least it should be special- therefore I dress in accordance with that. I usually wear a skirt, but sometimes I wear dress pants. On top I wear a button-up shirt, or nice t-shirt, depending on the skirt.

In the mornings of course it is a dress.
If it is cold, I wear a trenchcoat with my dress.
In the evenings, it is more casual.
With either jeans or slacks.
With a casual but nice shirt.
Or sweater when it is cold.

people wear whatever they feel like. Some dress up in suits and ties, and dresses and such. Some wear jeans and tennis shoes or pants and a swaetshirt. Whatever they feel comfortable in.
We have a small band with drums and little instruments, and a piano, sometimes we sing to a tape, just whatever.
