The best one-volume (and therefore affordable) commentaries, in my opinion, are
The New Jerome Biblical Commentary and HarperCollins Bible Commentary.

The New Jerome is a production of a team of Catholic scholars and the HarperCollins is an ecumenical production by the Society of Biblical Literature. New Jerome's is about twice as hefty and about twice as pricey as well, but both will address all the essentials one is certain to encounter in a serious study of Scripture.

After agreeing with Dunstan, let me also commend to you The Renovare' Spiritual Formation Bible. While it isn't a commentary, it is an excellent study/life resource for all catholic Christians.

Hi Michael. I already have The Renovare Spiritual Formation Bible. :) It is a great Bible.

Anyway, does anyone know if The New Jerome Biblical Commentary or the HarperCollins Bible Commentary are available for E-Sword anywhere?

I'm pretty sure not. I would love a copy of either for it if there were.

There really isn't much available even half way good and contemporary for E-sword when it comes to commentaries. Laridian has a much better selection, but still doesn't either of those. E-Sword is fine for the old, out of copyright stuff and diverse bible translations, but pretty limited on commentaries.

If you have some money to spend, then I highly recommend this software. It is several orders of magnitude better than anything else.

Logos Bible Software - Bible Study has never been easier!

This commentary is available there, although it is kind of expensive in addition to the other stuff you get with the program.

However, This is the best bible exposition I have ever come across. It is available there as a full 21 volume set or as individual books for around $35 each.

I only have the volume on Romans (600 pages) and it is outstanding.

Title: Horae Homileticae: or Discourses Digested into One Continuous Series and Forming a Commentary Upon Every Book of the Old and New Testament
Author: Charles Simeon
12,414 pages
Holdsworth and Ball, 1832
Charles Simeon's Horae Homileticae Commentary (21 Vols.)
horae homileticae - Site Search

Fr. Simeon was an Anglican Priest in England.

MMmm. I stick to e-sword, Laridian and Olivetree though, because they run on Windows mobile. I hate reading much on a desktop PC. The software itself isn't a big deal either way, and I can carry a small library of stuff in my shirt pocket. But if money and platform is no object... I'd cough up for the electronic edition of New Interpreters Bible.

Hmmm, well that kinda bites. All well, do you know of any good commentaries that E-Sword does have?

So far as I know the all the legal commercial ones are on their website - none of which bowl me over. There are some other old (and therefore out of copyright) ones you can find at e-Sword Users | e-Sword Essentials & More! and the odd illegal port one can find if one looks hard enough but nothing really worth the effort that I've come across. It's very good for bibles, and okay for dictionaries, but less than inspiring for commentaries.

The only thing I regularly use the commentaries section for in e-Sword is the NET translator's notes, which are worth having.

I use e-sword and I have most of the dictionaries and commentaries (both the free stuff and the stuff you gotta pay for). I also have the KJV, NASB, and NLT Bibles on it.

I read a verse or verses in the KJV version, type what I think it means in the study notes, then begin reading everything...copying and pasting certain phrases I like. After that, I rewritten my interpretation and compare the two to see how much someone else's insight changed my first gut interpretation. It really opens my mind to the entire meaning of God's Word.

(working on an Intro of Proverbs right now)

Thank you for this resource Ebia. I noticed that they only have the partial notes for the NET Bible. Do you know where I can find the complete notes for E-Sword at?

Directly from Bible.org: NET Bible Download | Bible.org; NET Bible, Bible Study

You need to buy the premium version ($19.95 US) to get the full notes, but well worth it IMO. If you buy the printed NET bible you suddenly realise how many notes there are (some pages have two or three verses of text and the rest of the page is made up of notes).

I'm very cautious of single volume commentaries and would instead encourage investing in single book commentaries (though just because one commentary from a series is good, it doesn't mean the others are - there are many guides available on the internet). However the best single volume commentary i've encountered is eerdmans.

THere aren't many good "Anglican" commentaries aroung these days- with the exception of individual authors.

Here are some good ones from various traditions:

The best OT commentary is Keil-Delitzch (which is available for e-Sword).

Good commentaries for the NT are Joseph Beet's and Wesley's Notes and the Jewish NT Commentary by David Stern.

Whole Bible commentaries are the Jerome (as mentioned already) and commentaries by Adam Clarke, Daniel Whedon and Paul Kretzmann.
