They don't have to fire anyone.
But if you can't list 5 things you did in a week (unless it's classified) you probably should be fired

You seem to miss the point. Musk has no authority to bypass the heads of government agencies.

I understand that this email from Musk is controversial. Supporters of Musk and President Trump assert that this five-point bulleted email is significant, while the opposition argues that Musk lacks the authority.

However, my query is: if every federal employee responds to the email and sends Mr. Musk the requested information, what would be the outcome of such an action?

DOGE and Musk do not have the capacity to read millions of emails. Even if DOGE reads and summarizes all the emails, verifying the accuracy of the contents is challenging. Will DOGE send employees to each location to interview federal employees and verify their claims of accomplishment?

If the accomplishment is not verified, what is the point?

It was to see how many would respond and it was a trivial task but they couldn’t even do that

In another thread, I am debating with some Democrats who believe a twenty-five-year-old is the right choice to chair the DNC. They lack a solid defense but continue arguing because they dislike the opposition.

The same issue is present in this thread. The email from Musk appears to be unfounded, as you yourself acknowledge it is a “trivial task”. However, you continue to defend Musk's actions without any substantial justification, because you don’t like the opposition.

The American public did not elect President Trump to engage in trivial pursuits with the federal government to determine whether they respond to an email or not. But don’t worry, American people will return the favor in November 2026.

I kind of wish I had gotten one so I could respond with explicit instructions on how to fold his e-mail until it is all corners and ...

I fail to see why federal employees should jump through hoops in response to these antics?

I’m so glad that you have all this figured out and that you don’t do anything like you’re describing. It must be nice to be you

...or, simply tell the Department heads to cut x % of their budget by x date....you know, like a normal leader would do.

it's so funny watching these cuts, they are so incompetent that they literally have to rehire the people they fire days later, I'm sure nothing can go wrong with firing people in charge of nuclear weapons, or making egg prices go down and such. plus love how the usual nonsensical lies from the GOP oh we need to cut these things from the defieit thats why trumps running ads with the same money and plans to give all of it in tax cuts to the rich. sorry we don't care if our nukes explode, we just care rich get money. it's the dumbest con in american history, the gop NEVER wants to balance the budget they just don't want money going to the needy.

He doesn't need to. What he does need to do and what he should be doing is meeting with the heads of departments and discussing ways and means to increase efficiency. They know how their departments run. They know who is important to the running of the department. Tell them that they need to show hard figureds on what efficiencies can be obtained and when they can be obtained.

If you know what you are doing then this is so obviously what's needed that it shouldn't be necessary to point this out. But it is oh so painfully obvious that Musk doesn't have any idea what he is doing.

His boss doesn't have a clue.
And Musk doesn't even run DOGE: Who Runs Elon Musk’s DOGE? Not Musk, the White House Says.

'...a White House official stated plainly that “Mr. Musk is not the U.S. DOGE Service Administrator.” The official, Joshua Fisher, made the statement in a declaration to a judge, U.S. District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan, who is hearing a case filed by Democratic attorneys general against Mr. Musk and the DOGE effort.

Mr. Fisher added that Mr. Musk was “an employee in the White House Office” and “not an employee of the U.S. DOGE Service.”

Mr. Fisher added that Mr. Musk was “an employee in the White House Office” and “not an employee of the U.S. DOGE Service.”

...as of yesterday, the person is charge....is in Mexico.

This afternoon the White House said that Amy Gleason, a former official at the U.S. Digital Service, the agency that Trump’s executive order may have turned into the Department of Government Efficiency, is serving as the acting administrator of DOGE. Reporters reached her by phone in Mexico.

....and it gets better:

Today, once again, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt refused to say who was in charge of DOGE, a day after Matt Bai reported in the Washington Post that two of Musk’s DOGE employees, Luke Farritor and Gavin Kliger, used their access to payment systems to override explicit orders from Secretary of State Marco Rubio and shut off funding to the United States Agency for International Development. Bai reports that Farritor is 23-year-old dropout from the University of Nebraska who interned at SpaceX; Kliger, 25, spreads conspiracy theories about the “deep state,” attended Berkeley, and is now installed at the Treasury Department.

This seems like it's bordering on the illegal. It's not like the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. The right hand is refusing to comply with the left hand. And nobody seems to know who is controlling either.

And US government sub-agencies go through the whole budget exercise every year under various budget levels (5% cut, flat, inflation, 5% growth, etc.) and then wait for Congress to set the budget level. (The only Constitutionally authorized power that can set budget levels.)
