One of my favorite (and fairly easy to understand) books is Steve Harper's The Way to Heaven -- The Gospel According to John Wesley. (It is actually an updated version of his earlier work John Wesley's Message for Today) The book is a plain language look at Wesley's theology of grace, its transforming power, Wesley's mission and methods as well at a consideration of the impact and relevance of Wesley's message to todays believers.

The book was published in 2003 by Zondervan. I found it at a Christian book warehouse.

That book is a most excellent suggestion. At what level of scholarship are you interested? Personally, I recommend reading Wesley himself, not just what others wrote about him. To that end I would suggest checking out these websites:
Christian Classics Ethereal Library--Works by John Wesley and The Sermons of John Wesley

The classic book about John Wesley is Albert Outler's John Welsey. But my personal favorite is The Burning Heart, John Wesley: Evangelist, by Skevington Wood.

Some other books that you might be interested in regarding United Methodist theology beyond Wesley are:

Methodist Doctrine: The Essentials, by Ted Campbell

United Methodist Questions, United Methodist Answers: Exploring Christian Faith, by F. Belton Joyner, Jr.

John Wesley's Message Today, by Lovett H. Weems, Jr.

Essentials of Wesleyan Theology: A Contemporary Affirmation, by Paul A. Mickey

Three Simple Rules: A Wesleyan Way of Living, by Rueben P. Job

I can recommend many others, but it sounds like you have a lot of reading to do so unless you want to read every single work about Wesley that exists...

Since you're new to the world of Wesley, you may not have heard of a Christian bookstore that many Methodists use constantly, Cokesbury. They have an extensive collection of Methodist theology and history books as well as anything that you can find at any Christian bookstore anywhere in the country. The website is www.cokesbury.com.

I can't edit the title of the thread to include this but would anyone happen to be able to name some good books about the man himself and the church history? As you can see I love reading plus it would make a great paper for an upcoming writing assignment.

The classic book about John Wesley is Albert Outler's John Welsey. But my personal favorite is The Burning Heart, John Wesley: Evangelist, by Skevington Wood.

Maybe you want a simple biography: Strangely Warmed: The Amazing Life of John Wesley, by Garth Lean.

A good history is: The Story of American Methodism, by Frederick A. Norwood.

And here is a whole list of books on Wesleyan studies from Abingdon Press
