On the day of the atonement in Leviticus 16:

15 He shall then slaughter the goat for the sin offering for the people and take its blood behind the curtain and do with it as he did with the bull's blood: He shall sprinkle it on the atonement cover and in front of it.
After the Babylonian exile, Zerubbabel rebuilt the Second Temple in Jerusalem. Although the ark of the covenant was no longer available, they still set up the curtain between the holy place and the most holy place.

What did the high priest do with the sacrificial blood on the day of atonement behind the curtain?

The place was empty. He probably sprinkled the blood in the spot where the ark was supposed to be. The space remained sacred.

When Jesus died on the cross, Matt 27:

50 Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit. 51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split.
In 70 AD, the Romans destroyed the temple, which has not been rebuilt since.
