My husband had a vasectomy 7 years ago.
Well today, I went to Prime care because I am sick, I have been all month... One I thought i had bladder infection... Anyways I gave a urine sample and the nurse came in and said are you pregnant I said no... and he said could you be, I said no. He said how do you know. I said because my husband had a vasectomy. Well the doctor came in and checked me out, came back with urine results and said well your not pregnant, I said well I know that.. He said well we did find rare sperm. I said how, he had a vasectomy 7 years ago. He said did he ever have it checked, well no he didnt, but its been 7 years. THen i said we havent did anything in a month ive been sick... He said he needs to have it checked before you end up pregnant at 42, (im 33 now)
Well I told my husband and now he is making rude comments about a boyfriend and what am I going to say if he is sterile..
I am so upset now and confused. I shouldnt of told him I guess.
Was it a fluke?

IS THIS POSSIBLE?
Does anyone know whats going on.. I am scared..

My thought is you say you have not done anything for a month, seems to me a sperm would not last that long in your body.Have you gone to this doctor for awhile? What is a rare sperm? You are not pregnant so why would your husband be so rude to you?You should be able to talk to him without him being rude.

How long did they have your urine sample for? Why would they be checking for sperm or sperm? It just takes a quick dip at the dr's office to see if there is evidence of a bladder infection. When it is forwarded on to the lab for conclusive evidence, they normally only check for what you ask. Not a whole barrage of things. It seems fishy to me.

I'm confused about a few things here. So, you are not pregnant? And, how did he check you for sperm? You cannot test urine for sperm.

Things sound a little odd. If this is what your doctor is saying, you need a new doctor.

However on the vasectomy thing, few men go back to double check after the procedure. Most pregnancies after a vasectomy happen with the first month and up to the first six months. There is still a failure rate after six months, it's low but I've talked to women who got pregnant a year or more after a vasectomy. The only perfect form of contraception is abstinence but, even then, I know of one case where complete abstinence didn't work :)

Your doctor sounds like an idiot, and I'm not sure why he was looking for sperm in a urine sample.. but aside from that

he probably was referring to rare non-motile sperm. Up to 5% of men continue to have the presence of RNMS in their sperm samples a year or more after vasectomy. About half of men don't return for a sperm analysis after vasectomy so many of the figures out there are rather limited in scope.

Your husband should see his urologist to settle the issue of his still not yet becoming azoospermic. (sperm free for lack of a better phrase) The pregnancy rate even in men who were found to have non-motile sperm present is minimal but still possible apparently. (again the studies are rather useless because men don't follow up ...)

I agree with many others in this thread... your doctor sounds like an idiot. I don't know how you'd end up with sperm in your urine, and even so, sperm are microscopic and to get such results back you would have to have lab tests done and whatnot... that is insane.

But yes, a vasectomy can "fail" or can end up being "ineffective" after some years. It happened to my dad.

Thats exactly what I thought about the doctor, because he was cocky. I did also look up rare sperm and found the same information given here (thanks for that information cause I was confused about that)

I think the big reason my husband was upset was because its been over a month since we did anything because I have been so sick and for it to be found in my urine really baffled him. He has got over it and now we are going to the doctor Wednesday to get a referral to a urologist.

The only thing I can think of is he check for it, why he checked for it was beyond me, he must of requested for the check when I said my husband had a vasectomy.. How it can be detected in a urine sample baffled me quite a bit. I dont know..

and no I have never seen this doctor before..

Thanks for the support!!

Dawn you sound more sure of yourself thank goodness. I felt bad because I thought maybe I sounded flippant calling your doctor an idiot, but I'm so tired of doctors just talking to women any old kind of way and not really helping them.

I'm glad things are better this evening and hubby is no longer upset. I can see the reasons for him being confused also, his initial response had to be upsetting for you.

I hope you're feeling better soon. :)

I know they couldn't have checked for sperm but they probably saw something white flouding in your urine sample. Normally when you see that its sperm. It almost looks like a piece of toilet paper when its been in the water too long. Sperm can be in your body for 3 days. I used to work in a doctor's office, we would see this alot. What the tech probably did is write this in your chart, and thats how your Dr. found out about it. Its a good thing you arn't seeing that Dr. no more though. Becuase if they messed up on that then who knows what else they will goof up.

What???

I seriously don't understand how someone who graduated from medical school would ever say, "Hey, you're pregnant!" and then, "Nope, wait, but you have sperm floating around in your urine."

I seriously do not understand that.

And if I was a doctor and saw that a tech wrote that there was sperm in a woman's urine, I think I'd double check on that result before going to the patient!

This is supremely strange.

After three children, my brother in law had a vasectomy. Needless to say, three years later, my youngest nephew arrived. Before my sister in law left the hospital, she had her tubes tied.

Yes, it can happen.

This all happened before I married my husband (these were his sisters and brothers in law)

The best part about the story....

Both of his sisters were pregnant at the same time. He called me one night to say he was going to his sister Kathy's house to sit with her other children while she went to the hospital because she was in labor. I told him to call me in the morning to let me know what she had.

The next morning, he called me, exasperated and tired. Christine had a boy. Christine? I asked, I thought you went to Kathy's house? I did, he responded, then Christine called within two hours that she too was in labor, so he packed up one set of kids and high tailed it to the other's house to sit with all the kids while all the parents were in the hospital. By morning, Christine had delivered a boy, and a few hours later, Kathy delivered a girl.

So both my youngest nieces and nephews are are few hours apart, but born on different days. One before midnight, the other in the early morning.

We still joke about that phone call. Whatta night he had.

Especially when they dont "count sperm" to determine if you are pregnant. They detect a harmone in the urine. It wouldn't matter how many sperm are floating in a cup, it matters if just one found its target.

Thats what sounds so strange about the whole thing. Sperm in a cup doesn't mean your pregnant. Its the HCG's in your urine that determine if you are pregnant.

Yeah, this sounds really ridiculous. I still don't understand why there weren't any red flags to anyone in this story over the "sperm in the urine" situation. Sperm in your urethra wouldn't get you pregnant anyhow.
