CV NEWS FEED // Police are investigating an incident of vandalism that took place last week in Oklahoma, where a suspect forcibly toppled and broke a historic statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and a statue of the Holy Family outside of a local Catholic church.

The vandalism took place on April 19 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Upon discovering the toppled statues, the parish reported the vandalism, which was caught on security cameras, to local police.

Three people were seen on camera when the vandalism took place, but only one of them is reportedly seen damaging the statues.

Associate pastor Fr. Robert Dye told local news outlet the Muskogee Phoenix, “It looks like someone came up to both statues and pushed them over… One of them, you can see him pushing hard. It took some effort. It was bolted down.”

This is terrible. I wonder why there have been so many attacks against the Catholic Church?

In this case it looks like an iconoclastic attack, which could have come from Iconoclast heretics or from Muslims, potentially (Islam is where iconoclasm historically originated, and then it infected the Church in Constantinople due to political pressure from superstitious generals and politicians who, rather than accepting that their own military was inadequate, and also that their mistreatment of the Oriental Orthodox and other Christians had resulted in a disunity in terms of a lack of people willing to fight to defend the Byzantine Empire, decided that the success of the Ummayid Caliphate had to be due to its iconoclasm, and thus a great deal of early iconography was lost. Fortunately some of the best icons were preserved at St. Catharine’s in Sinai, such as the classic sixth century icon of Christ Pantocrator.

As for why people attack the Roman Catholic Church, unfortunately anti-Catholicism is widespread, and one noted author lamented that it was “the last acceptable prejudice.” I can think of a few more examples of similiar prejudice, but hatred for Catholics remains widespread, and it is quite sickening to compare how society responds to anti-Catholicism vs. Islamophobia. Frankly, a fear of Islam seems not entirely unjustified, given that Islamic fundamentalists are known for killing Christians, whereas Catholics do not pose a threat to anyone, but rather are a great blessing.

OK is one of the LEAST Catholic states in our nation only 4% whereas most states are 25% Catholic or thereabouts.

I have lived there and seen a lot of un-Christian stuff and anti-Catholic behavior... protestantism is virulently anti-Catholic most of the time.. in my pov
