I've been wondering the same myself. My gress is reasoning. St. Peter was crucified upside down because he didn't claim the honor of being crucified in the same manner as Jesus. However, non-Christians use it as a way to take the Christian symbol and turn it upside down as a disshonor and disgrace.

why does the upside down cross usualy represent satan when St. Peter was crucified upside down?
Because, like the Catholic Church, Satanists know that St. Peter was chosen to be the head of the Church by Jesus Himself. By mocking St. Peter and his death, they also mock Christ and His Church. Why do you suppose they also desecrate the Eucharist in their black masses? They are desecrating Christ Himself.

Historically speacking, the upside down cross was used by satanist only inthe middle-age, while St Peter was crucified upside down in the 64 after Christ. And the fact of the cross uside down cames from the more ancient tradition, of the II century, many centuries before any other meaning of the upside downcross.

Please read this interesting article about Peter (and the upside down cross), from a Orient Orthodox magazine (not a Catholic One): http://www.socdigest.org/articles/04aug06.html (thanks to http://www.christianforums.com/t3284583-the-august-2006-edition-of-shroro-is-now-online.html#post26100529)

Actually, they get it from a pagan concept.
Positive and Negative energies, an upright pentacle (5 pointed star, point up) is the symbol of positive (white) magic, while it's opposite, the pentagram (5 poined star, point down) is a symbol of negative (black) magic.
A sword uplifted represents hostility, while one pointed down is a friendly gesture.
In the Tarot, the cards get a positive interpretation face upright, and a negative interpretation inverted.
The well known "peace symbol" of the '60s is an inverted norse viking "war" rune placed in a circle which repesents action.
Thus it is only natural that in their ignorance of St. Peter's martyrdom, that they would look at the cross as representing Christianity and invert it as an expression of opposition (darkness) which to their understanding "should" symbolize Satan.

Are you kidding?
nope, not kidding. And from then on all the other girls (we were in 6th grade at the time I think) in the group would hound me whenever I wore that shirt, telling me it was satanic and that I should throw it away.
Kids will believe what their leaders tell them, folks. Even if it's crap.
This same leader decided to bash Catholics the day I invited one of my Catholic friends to the Bible study.
She didn't know my friend was RC, and my poor friend sat through the whole thing as I wanted to cry. I went home and cried to my mom about it and that leader was soon asked to stop teaching.

I have a sore spot for those kinds of situations. sorry to derail!
