There is a Lenten retreat at our parish coming up with a speaker by the name of Turbo Qualls. Apparently he's well-known in Orthodoxy according to Father. I've never heard of him, but that's not unusual seeing as how I still haven't heard of half of the legends or big names in Orthodoxy! ^_^

I tried to Google him and because "Turbo" is such a weird name, it brings up speedometers and motorcycles, racing, and oil! LOL I'd expect the usual "basil" or "seraphim" or "vladimir" or "george," but "turbo" is more NASCAR in nature than Orthodox, so I didn't know who this guy was? LOL

Anybody heard of this guy?

im friends with him on Facebook. i think he's associated with the Death to the World people (although i don't know if he's actually involved in the zine itself), and i think he's well known for his tattoos, but i dont know much about him other than that or why he would be a speaker for a retreat.

it was his nickname, and then when he was entering the Church he found that there actually is a Saint Turbo:

Martyr Turbo, in Cappadocia

Commemorated on January 16 Troparion & Kontakion
Saint Turbo was put to death with the holy martyrs Speusippus, Eleusippus, Meleusippus, and their grandmother Leonilla, and also with Neon and Jonilla. They suffered in Gaul (by another account, in Cappadocia) in the second century, during the persecution under Marcus Aurelius (161-180).
St Turbo, after he copied out the exploits of the passion-bearers, also ended his life by martyrdom. These martyrs are particularly revered in Spain, where many churches are dedicated to them. The relics of the holy martyrs were given by the Byzantine emperor Zeno to a French nobleman from the city of Langres, where they now rest.

I was joking with my wife and said, "If there is a St. Turbo and he's the patron saint of getting people out of CHP (California Highway Patrol) tickets, I'm IN! I will plaster my house with icons of him!" LOL...(I've had my share of run-ins with the chippies [bums]...^_^

I finally found some stuff on him. Yes, he's African-American. The guy's a tattoo artist (sigh...). My wife and I passionately HATE tattoos (unless they're military, makes more sense)....the guy owns a tattoo shop and talks a LOT about tats in every interview I found.

Not sure if I'll go or not. He seems really bright. Not sure if it's really my bag. I'll keep reading.

I read kind article about somebody in USA with that original name "Turbo". From memory, he is afro-.

Reading the thread titles, came across this one and thought "Yeah...where do I know that name from?" lol.

For those who don't know, Gurney and I go to the same parish.

And hey, if it weren't for my tattoos I might very well not be Orthodox today, so careful, y'all, about being too quick to condemn them.

I'm really looking forward to this retreat. I'm hoping I can make it!

Heh, I've been considering getting 3/4 sleeves for years. Though since marrying Brandy I've procrastinated a lot since she's not a fan either...

I don't follow? 3/4 sleeves? You mean you have tats you want to cover up?

What are 3/4 sleeves?

I've been praying for you. Are you still married?

There's no "y'all," Joe, just me and Kate! LOL...nobody else in here said anything, just moi. But you already knew I hated tats. Can't stand 'em. There are a lot of Jewish rabbis who won't give a Jewish burial or ceremony to people with them as they view them as desecration of the flesh. I know we're not Jewish, but in that regard, my name is Rabbi Gurney Morganstein! LOL
