Former President Donald Trump says he would create a government efficiency commission to audit the entire federal government

ByJONATHAN J. COOPER Associated Press
September 5, 2024,

PHOENIX -- Former President Donald Trump said Thursday he would create a government efficiency commission to audit the entire federal government, an idea suggested by billionaire Elon Musk, who would lead it.

The commission is the latest attention-grabbing alliance between Trump and Musk, who leads companies including Tesla and SpaceX and has become an increasingly vocal supporter of Trump's bid to return to the White House.

The Republican presidential nominee claimed that in 2022, “fraud and improper payments alone cost taxpayers an estimated hundreds of billions of dollars.” He said the commission would recommend “drastic reforms" and develop a plan to eliminate fraud and improper payments within six months, which he said would save trillions of dollars...

This should be interesting. Make America fiscally responsible again!

Hmmm...

SpaceX does seem to be doing ok financially (finally), but it's fully private, so that's harder to confirm. 1/3 isn't that great of a track record, especially considering how hard he tanked Twitter.

This is like one of those apocalyptic movies where we're in the worst possible timeline: corporate magnates rule our government and serve as aspirational models, everything that once made society livable is gutted in the name of some weird crypto-fascist ideology, etc. If Michael Ironside shows up to lecture us about the value of citizenship, I'm running to the hills.

lol, yeah, let's hire the guy who tanked Twitter and designed the Cybertruck.

He chased off the reasonably competent CEO's like Tillerson and Mnuchin and all he's left with are his fanbois.

You know I actually agree with them. There needs to be some kind of office designated to keep the government accountable. Or even better, maybe we can make sure each department and major agency has somebody whose job is to make sure things are running legally and efficiently. Of course to make sure they can do that they would need general authority to inspect the operations of the department. I wonder what we would call them though.

I think Elon would be a great consultant or something for the govt because he's a pretty assertive entrepeneur & knows what its like to attempt technology & appreciate failure. I think he's a realist & does not need to be paid off.

Maybe I was too tongue in check, so I'll say it more plainly. This is an solution looking for a problem. Congress already has an all-up Office, the Government Accountability Office, whose job is to perform both financial and performance audits of the US Government, led by an independent Comptroller. In addition to that, every major executive branch organization has an Office of the Inspector General responsible for internal audits and investigations and assuring federal monies issued to outside organizations are being spent properly. Those IGs coordinate their activities through the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency. And when Mr. Trump talks about "massive reforms" I strongly suspect he means cutting agencies and programs, which is Congress' prerogative, not the President's.

And his most recent ventures have been terrible. He way overpaid for Twitter and has made it notably worse (which is impressive TBH). Tesla started out strong, but it's losing marketshare pretty quickly, his auto-driving features haven't gone anywhere, QC on the original models has long been spotty, and the Cybertruck is a piece of junk.

What we need is someone like Harry Truman. "He became a Senator in 1934. During World War II he headed the Senate war investigating committee, checking into waste and corruption and saving perhaps as much as 15 billion dollars." Harry S. Truman | The White House The problem though is not finding waste, but getting the Congress to vote to eliminate it and their special interest friends and lobbyists that make campaign contributions.

Give how those two managed their companies, America would be bankrupt in a few years.
We're bankrupt already. Financially, morally, and spiritually.

The government just prints phony money to keep everyone distracted with sportsball, television, and Taylor Swift.

Elon couldn't do any worse.

Yet Musk is worth nearly a quarter trillion dollars: Elon Musk - Wikipedia.

He seems to know how to do things profitably. Compare him to America's federal government which is 35 or 36 trillion in debt.
I say we give Musk a chance to fix what's wrong with our government's spending, before our country is bankrupt.

Yeah it's pretty interesting seeing the wealthiest most successful person on earth being touted as a financial failure.

He's only amassed a net worth of around $250 billion dollars, what a loser.

And really I think that's the issue. There are without a doubt plenty of inefficiencies in the federal government, but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of that is more the result of redundancies than "waste" in the traditional sense. While I deeply disagree with almost all of the things that Trump has suggested or attempted, his reorganization plan had some good ideas to try and deal with some of those. Parts of it I thought were bad, but parts of it I wish Congress had enacted.

Ya, he has a quarter trillion while his companies are failing. That is a talent we don't need in the government. We have enough politicians that have that type of talent.

Anyone who's ever went to work on Monday and or made payroll on Friday has better odds than 90 percent of Washington DC of being successful

It’s pretty interesting seeing folks eschewing anything resembling nuance and just equating net worth with capability. For a crowd who so loudly decries elitism, arguing that wealth == qualification is a pretty odd position to take.
